Hi Damo

Good read, what model motor is that. I didn't think the later models had a cat in the up pipe. I have VF 30 as well, came with the motor.

Hi Steve

motor is 2001/'02 (i think)...........however i suspect the exhaust might have came off the previous engine........i'll tell you what tho, with the heat shield removed, those up pipes are a fairly agricultural piece of work

will you run the VF 30 or ?

STi's don't have a pre turbo cat, only MY01-02 WRX have it. And yes, they often end up jammed in the exhaust housing. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes the piece of cat reprofiles the turbine wheel. Any normal up pipe will bolt in it's place but if you have factory management you need to either refit the exhaust temp sensor or put a resistor across it. Aftermarket management cares not.

Hi Damian

I think the VF30 will do for a start. With the little things Ive done and will do it should make a bit over 200kW at the wheels, plenty for a while.

Bigger intercooler, bigger cross pipe, 3 inch exhaust, boost up a little and Autronic SM4 ECU.

thanx heaps for your knowledge........so, going by that engine is '02 as i first suspected. HALTECH ecu, so no probs with changing it. cut it up and cleaned it out with the die grinder so will do for the interim till we get all our duckies in a row again

cool Steve,

200KW at the wheels is plenty for sure....if you come up for the Winter break earlier in the week, we can throw a few laps down at Raleigh to get you keen on finishing yours off......very similar specs.

VF30 should make 200kw atw at around 18psi. 18psi would be considered a safe boost level for an STi engine with good intercooling.

Yeah Steve it's Al that did your wiring.

Daimo, 200kw atw(all 4) is no problems for a std WRX engine if tuned nicely. An STi engine has forged pistons and rods(in 2001 on) larger cams, AVCS valve control, no tumble valves, 550cc injectors, semi closed block deck and a lot of other little differences. They can handle up to 300kw atw(with shortned life obviously).
I wouldn't go over 20PSI in a std wrx engine with good intercooling. Charge cooling is a big variable when mounted in a beetle so you need to be careful of that. You would be better going up to a larger more efficient turbo in a beetle as it probably doesn't need the low end power due to no weight and the larger turbo will free the engine up and reduce the chance of detonation. Something like a TDO5 20G with 8cm exhaust housing.

Hi Al

I thought was you, when I get mine running eventually I might look at things that can be upgraded on the outside, that's why I bought a STI motor, it has all the good gear from the factory.

Would a TDO5 20G be a good upgrade for a 2002 STI motor?

Yeah TDO5 20G has a 68mm compressor as opposed to 60mm of the VF30 and 35. You can also get 8cm exhaust housings which will free up the top end even more. As always there is a sacrifice in low end power but in a light car it shouldn't matter. STi engine in particular will happily rev to 8k rpm and make power there so the bigger turbo is a good thing.
Kando Dynamic is a good source for TDO5's.

well, i got the heebeegeebies and pulled the turbo off to make sure it was undamaged internally...........pulled the exhaust housing off to reveal no significant damage to the blades where it had been jammed.

so the car is pretty much ready to race again now it's got it CAMS compliant livery on again........even polished the alloy and painted the exhaust, the car won't know what's going on now:love:

ok we are on the way :!:

the child slave labour is working well

the "practice" slicks have had the treatment too.....spit and polish and a good 10 coats of "RPM GRIP" (tyre softner).......that stuff is great for anyone with either new or aging race tyres!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/P1060067Medium.jpg

.......but it's not all a "work only" policy. the lil one got to enjoy the fruits of her labour after a long day :D

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/P1060069Medium.jpg

it must be in the blood :smirk:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/P1060076Medium.jpg

DAMN TRAILER SAILORS!.....

first step with this thing is always the trailer, but have managed to trim through the list of things to do before an event attendance is even possible.

:locate trailer and ramps bolt on the tyre chocks
:thorough de-mulch, degrease and wash the tray
:find some decent rims to replace rusty spares and get tyres changed over
:search faulty wiring, end up soldering half of the wires in the broken loom, more at the back, re-insulate many joins of which the insulation had aged and no longer served it's purpose
:replace rear tail lenses and clean up terminals so they actually work
:solder all wires at plug end
:replace "break away" unit
:weld broken tie down points and search and locate chains
:wheel bearings and electric brake maintanance

trailers SUCK ! :punk:

..........but they do serve a purpose....

did a fuel system clean and fired it up.
up to temperature and sent a can of subaru upper engine cleaner through the engine......got it safely onto the float and now in the garage at home for those late night stints.

'tis not much, but it's a start for sure:cool:

as i was fiddling around with it this arvo, a teenage fella with autism came past and spent a good hour looking around and asking questions. the dude was an absolute motorsport nut and was stoked to strap himself in, put up the window net and shift up and down the gears. He was STOKED.......and so was i. it has been worth the effort already

making up a list for the car now, plenty to get done yet :fakesniff:

onto the car........

: re-wire tail lights and master cylinder so brake lights operable (more damage from fire) which took the best part of a day..............Rizzo didn't look too impressed on dummy grid when i sent someone to tell him they had failed again last year.......hopefully he might have to see them this time around
: re done hardened fuel lines and pump wires at front of car away from radiator lines......added pre pump filter back under tank that was removed at Valla races 2008
: check front end components including bearings, pads for wear, calipers, tie rods, ball joints and steering.....bleed brakes and grease
: sort headlights
: fix front splitter
: fill and fully charge neglected battery
: clean out rat shit from interior
: change coolant, move turbo H20 return to correct side of engine
: replace bolts and gaskets in de-cated up pipe
: install new air intake pipe and subsquent re arrangement of attached ancillaries
: treat K&N air filter
: insulate tank from heat and build radiator shroud (most likely some of the longest/hardest running the car has ever done SHOULD happen at Wakefield)
: check rear brake pads and lines then bleed
: clean engine bay of all soot and crap from the fireball (FINALLY)
: condense spares boxes down to at the most 2 boxes of "well shouldn't....... but could possibly happen" essentials
: "pallet wrap" 3 sets of freshly "softened" wheels
: get away for a test and tune before even putting it on the trailer for the trip
: engineer and blue slip in time to drive to Goulburn  :borg:.......forget the trailer

.........and i'm still miles in front of last year!........back to it guys, check ya!
