Whats that noise?..................
Got home from Eastern Creek on Sunday, could hear a small knocking noise? from the engine, changed the oil & filter & started it up to drive to a
meeting 9.00am Monday morning. The knocking noise was worse until the enigne warmed up to temp, then it went back to being very quiet again. At first
I thought it was a big end after flogging it on the track all day, i have also checked the lifters on the right had side which is where the noise is
coming from, they are all fine so it may be a broken piston skirt which apparently is also common.
Still, over 12500kms of daily driving & 4 track days since lasy Xmas out of a an $850 engine isn't too bad. The cost to have it rebuilt? $1500. Try
doing that with a vw engine, god love em.!

Jak

To rebuild a VW motor:
Bearings $135
Flywheel Seal $29
Gasket set $65
Oil Pump $75
Rings $70 (or new PB Kit $430)
Linebore $90
Crank grind (if needed) $150
Assembly $450
So for around $1000 you can happily rebuild a VW engine :P
The cost is not in the rebuild, but in buying the engine in the first place! That's where the subaru has the advantage...........in the short
term.

That is definantly an option, but with the car going on the track at 4 to 5 times a year, I want the peice of mind of a new motor, not that a new
motor can't have anything go wrong with it , I also need the car for work so reliability is the main priority. My rebuild will also consist of
regrinding the crank if need be, lightening the flywheel, balancing the bottom end, new head gaskets, water pump, oil pump & relapping the valves. it
should go better then new, well thats the theory anyway LOL.
It will also be guaranteed not to overheat:thumb
At least now I will have the luxury of knowing the history of the engine.

Looking fantastic!
I guess this engine has taken the racing to a whole different level!
Would you get a cheapy motor to fill the hole (and let you use the car) while you do the rebuild?
Cheers

I've teed it up to do it over the weekend, then my engine builder needs only 2 working days to complete. I've got a stock 1600cc beetle engine if I
get really stuck but I'll just do without my beloved toy for acouple of days.

Craig you forgot the grindy grind on the crank. Is that what you pay stan each year for your new race motor rebuilds?
Anyone else going fishing today?
Made another sump on the weekend....it has just passed the leak test, so Ill be back attempting to destroy the motor by 10am. Rain...mmmm maybe if I
had a 5th gear I could get some traction!

I'm just fine! My own just-rebuilt 1916 is nicely run-in now while on the other side of the fence, GTMac and I are just working through a few
teething problems with the WRX transplant (such as a crap-quality throwout bearing supplied with the adapter plate and some CEL codes) plus waiting
for my machinist to finish work on the big vented disc brakes so that we can get the engineers certificate... Errr... why do you ask?

Nah, raced it for 7 years without needing a rebuild, even then it was only rebuilt because I dusted it on a dirt road (using crap air filters).

Oh well, the $1500 rebuild of my little jap crap engine in comparison to your last "standard" rebuild, how much does it cost these days for straight
cut gears, twin 48mm webbers, new manifolds, match porting, twin plug distributor & the drilling of a couple of new holes in your heads, for how much
more power?
Comparison of hp per dollar?
Comparison of dollar per kilometre u actually drive?
It's all good, hot vw's are cool.:thumb
