76 AUTO Kombi the best and the worst
Hey all.
Looking for hints and tips on where to start, what to look out for and what to avoid when making my kombi as safe as possible.
At the moment she is registered as a two seater, - despite having a two seater in the back which folds out into a bed. The previous owner failed to
get modification plates - walk through, with westie windows.
Based in Cabarita just south of the tweed but am up in Brisbane 2 nights a week so any info from the qld or northern nsw kombi gurus would be
great.
Cheers

hi kittendelux
this isn't really answering your questions, but i have a similar vehicle and this is where i am coming from .... i am definately NO mechanic as the
most technologically advanced piece of toolery i own is a claw hammer and my mechanics phone number.
i have a 75 camper westfalia and my compliance plate also says or specifies that it is a two seater. However, when i bought her about 6 years ago, i
became the third or fourth owner and somewhere along the line someone had also put in a fold out bed seat making her a four person vehicle. seat belts
were attached before i bought and i have had no ttrouble registering the van ever since i have owned it.(i have never seen a moidification certificate
either) Now living in nsw might have different laws to that of qld but thats how i've "lived" ie, it hasn't been an issue. As for safety, well i
already had retractable seatbelts in and i only drive at 80kph to 90 kph. My mechanic is very thorough with it says that it is in very good shape.(I
have tried to keep it stock standard) So i guess if it is in good nick mechanically and driven sensibly it should be ok. If i could, about the only
thing on my wish list would be ABS brakes, but that is only piece of mind, then again if its driven sensibly....
all the best
ned
i plan to live forever.....so far so good.

I've thought about this very question and come to the conclusion that the best you can do without ridiculously expensively rengineering your kombi is
to make sure that the various basic systems that it came with from the factory are in good working order. i.e. brakes, steering, suspension, tyres,
lights, etc. I suspect there is enough stuff that needs doing on these areas in many kombis on the road to keep the owners busy for some time. A good
starting point is if it's rubber and original replace it! Suspect items include fuel, brake and vacuum hoses and the rubber disk at the base of the
steering column.

Cheers Ned,
It was good to hear that you've had your fold out certified. I will have to check out with the RTA exactly what the prob is, i think it may have to
do with the seat back being held up by door bolts. Is this standard?
Since i have had her the few times i have gone over 80 kph the fan belt has slipped off, but i have had a new one with ridges put on and that seems to
work a treat... ABS brakes certianly sounds brill...

hey all,
BIG THANKS for all the info I have taken the comment to have all the rubber replaced esp the fuel line. Have had my brakes overhauled and have had the
play taken out of the steering wheel. I have also replaced the seal around the engine
