HOW TO: Replace the rear badge on a New Beetle


I replaced my rear badge today on the New Beetle, thanks to a handy webpage at NewBeetle.org.. http://newbeetle.org/vb3/showthread.php?p=942 

Here's my pics of the process, but if you click on the link, he will tell you exactly how it is done step by step.

Firstly remove the screws out of the handle sections on the inside of your boot, pop the clips apart, working from the latch area around each side to the window section, and then push it towards the front of the car to finally remove it. This will show you the inner workings of the mechanism and electricals.

In the pics above, the old badge, the cover off, and the electricals removed from their holes and assigned areas. You can also see the bracket on the rear parcel shelf. That is the next thing to be removed. It is held on by three phillips head screws, and a 'torx' screw, around 20 size,(if desperate you can always try an allen key). To get the bracket out, you will also need to disconnect the mechanism that goes from the motor to the latch. I don't know the name of this thing, but it is like a knuckle or hip joint; it has a ball and pops into a socket type arrangement. Pop it off using a flat head screwdriver, but don't adjust it! Just set it aside, or else it will cause big headaches later.

Undo the three torx screws that hold the inner badge(i.e. the finger well when the badge is open on the outside) to the outer badge by the 'dress ring' or chrome trim the outer switch/ latch sits in(under the badge when it is closed). The next step sounds wierd...

Heat the inside of the badge/mechanism with a hair dryer on hot, whilst pushing in the finger well I mentioned above. It is just sticky gluey crap that secures things, and the heat frees it up enough to pop everything out.

Take the dust cover off the shaft of the badge, and you will see the C clip, which holds a spring. Gently pop off the C clip but be careful not to lose the spring. There is also a washer and a rubber O ring on the old badge too, that you will need to transfer to the new one.

Put the spring on the new badge, and the C clip into the 'groove' around the base of the new badge. Return the dust cover as well.

Basically reassemble everything again, in the opposite order, and replug all the plugs and electrical bits.

Return the screws to the handle sections, after you have refitted the plastic cover, window end first.

Done deal. New badge, and all works.

jim,
have done the second reverse light on the cabrio. order one from a volkswagen dealership but make sure you are clear in wanting the rhs one. got ours from camberwell as they were the cheapest at the time and from memory it wasn't expensive.
Did mine in about 2 hours (had to remove some of my exhaust system to gain access to the existing lights) so if you dont have to do that then it should take less than an hour to do.... all you need is two lengths of wire to go from one side of the car to the other, pliers, 4 crimp lug connectors (plus crimping tool if your pliers dont have the crimp tool in them), cable ties and some insulation tape.

Hey Cam....no more turbo's baby, Aussie land aint getting them anymore. All we got now is the 1.6ltr hardtop and the 2.0ltr cab. How quier.:duh

nope... but have heard there is not much to it... just push open the bit on the dash toward the windscreen and remove it... then pull out the filter and change it... install the dash piece and that's it... only what i have heard tho.. so dont know how tru.

you forgot about the cover over the actual pollen filter . Takes a bit of force to get it out . Inexperienced hands = lots of broken bits !

oh... well as i said... only repeating what i was told by a vw mechanic... so he may have left stuff out or i tuned out by then.. lol..
have you tried newbeetle.org ??? there may be a thread on that forum which has the info you are after.

Lol , I was just curious to see if people have done it ? Its a very informative guide on taking out the rear badge . Most people wont need to where as the pollen filter is a service item and requires periodic changing .

I was recently looking at changning my intake to a cold air intake, the Neuspeed version, which replaced the pollen filter for a pod filter. Still thinking that one over..

Okay, so that reverse light thing sounds okay.. should be able to figure that bit out.

I also have a little LED that is going to change my flashing red doorlock light to a flashing neon blue one, the same as the dash at night.... Should be cool, and pretty simple, but I just gotta do it.

Currently looking at some nice 18's too... :D:D

Jim,
If you find a supplier of wheels for the new beetle can you pass on the name to me.. we are having to search heaps to find someone who supplies wheels in 18 or 19's for new beetles... and not a subaru/vw combination wheel. We have some wheels coming in november which we may put on but want to see them in the flesh...
We have found a place near stkilda road .. think its called show wheels or something like that... each time we have been they were closed as they attend lots of shows etc... but they have some huge chrome wheels in the window.

Stick with the stock air intake . The mafs dont like oiled filters and yes that means K and N too

yeah i looked at tempetyres... trace wanted to take a trip up to look at some of em in the flesh... its hard to tell with some of the wheels whether they would look good on the car...

Imagine cleaning those mo foes... MMmmmm... nah..

Although it would just be a Windex spray and wipe job..

I am hell keen on getting chrome rims. 18's are the max with our car, to my knowledge..(2 up, 1 out)

dunno bout the 1 out...but 2 up, nah you can go as big as you like as long as the compensation is taken in the profile of the tyre...i think.

Ive been told i can go 20's as long as they are still 7.5 wide...which is very hard to find
Meh, im so over 18's, i need bigger...bahahaha...in the US you can get diamontes in the rims...now thats BLING, i want those.
