problems purchasing over the net

well, time for a whinge.
i recently sent some money to belgium via telegraphic transfer to purchase some replica robri (flat 4) gravel guards.

we had agreed on price. he said that i could nt send him the money via paypal because the banks over there were too slow to clear the deposit and transfer it into his account.

so i sent telegraph rather than USD in an envelope as i have heard bad stories about the money "never arriving"

... so all is well...
... then i got an email saying that he had received the money but his bank had taken some money out as a 'transfer fee'.

so i replied saying "if you have any further problems be in touch and we will sort them out".... hoping that he would take the (presumably minor) loss and send the stuff anyway.

.... no luck. got an email today saying "i have sent the first package, but when it arrives i will require a further $35USD for the second package"
... to which i replied "i am confused. i thought the agreed amount was 145. my bank has confirmed correct amount deposited etc.... please explain"

so now i m stuck.
i m waiting for a reply, but i think i m gonna have to fork out the extra $ cos hes got me over a barrell.

any advice out there people?

if not, then tell me a story that this has happened to you and i ll feel a bit better
:(

I was assured by a seller in Malaysia that sending US$ in an envelope inside a card (so you can't see through the envelope) was okay - "I've done it heaps of time with no troubles" so he told me. I still trust that he didn't shaft me but US$80 went down the drain quick smart. Fortunately he agreed to halve the cost instead of asking for the full amount again - that time I did the TFT with no probs.

It certainly sucks when it happens to you! Hope you get it all sorted out.

I am in the process of trying to get some stuff from germany...
I hope i dont have the same hassels.
As for OS COD... sounds like a fine idea!
But as like most good ideas, it will never get off the ground...
And as for ripping of a fellow australian vee dubber...
I got ripped for $80 US by a so-called vee dubber in western oz...
But we all live and learn..

I have bought many parts on ebay and many books from Amazon.com in the USA, with NO problems.... ebay is very safe...
I have used PayPal in Aust & the USA with no problems... You do get charged by Your bank a few cents for using it...
Most commercial companies are trust worthy... its the individuals You have trouble with..... there are crooks every where... sorry to hear that they read the forum.... A fellow told Me that there was a sign at his local Gym stating
"Even crooks have to work out - lock up Your Valuables"
and its SAD to see that they are involved with VWs too ....:(:vader

I've done a lot of on-line buying and have had mostly success. I've never completely lost my money, but I've never sent cash, either (it's actually not just stupid, but illegal.) The closest I've had to losing money was an e-bayer who advertised a price in AU$, and I (thought I had) made the payment in AU$, but paypal took US$ from my card. Paypal were most unhelpful, saying I had to try to get the money back from the seller. I never did get the money back (though, it wasn't all that much,) and I avoid dealing with paypal or the seller (often seen with VW "bargains" under the name of Empi on e-bay.) I have also bought a carb from an advertiser here that was in far worse condition than the seller had claimed - it'll end up costing me almost as much as a new one, but I got a good manifold out of it. :)

My advice is to not be tempted by offers from people who want cash (e-bay was okay with my pulling out of a deal with someone from Malasia who had advertised a number of payment options, then wanted cash,) and check up on anyone before you make a deal. It sounds like some people above have fallen for an old scam: if you send cash the recipient can easily claim they never received it and you have no recourse as you have acted illegally. The best option for overseas deals is credit card, as the banks are legally obliged to cover any fraudulent transactions, with a money order at least covering you for anyone who claims they didn't receive your money.

Dealing with private citizens in other countries is always going to be risky - maybe you should spend the money on scratchies instead?

I sell music on Ebay and have been doing for years. I very rarely buy overseas as I don't trust anyone from Europe. My biggest problems are belgium and Luxembourg. I have had packages stolen / opened and contents stolen / money stolen, from posting to these countries. Dealing with Spain and Italy is also a drag. Post takes forever and a good chance it won't get there. There are some dodgy Aussie dealers believe me. There's a guy in melbourne who rips people off regularily.
check out my feedback on Ebay... metal_machine_music

robris

yeah,
i thought that i was gonna get them for a bargain price, even after shipping.

doesnt look like it will turn out that way.

i m disappointed now (in hindsight) but im still waiting to see the results after all the comings and goings.

as a general rule i would rather support an australian vw business, so i wont make this mistake next time, even if there is extra costs involved.

thanks for the feedback anyway

everything always seems clearer with hindsight.:)

Know the feeling - maybe the moderators would put up a forum for people looking to buy from Ozzy businesses. Maybe that would upset our sponsor, but I think there are enough people here who would reccomend MickMotors for anything they carry as the first port of call...

this is funny, i'm right in the middle of what looks to be an internet 'sting', just playing the cards to see what happens...

we have a bmw thats selling for about $4,000. we get an enquiry through drive.com.au from someone saying they like the car, happy with it as is. Would we ship the car to Africa, and would we accept a cashier check (bank cheque equivalent) from an american bank?

this could go either way so i make it clear in response that we are happy to oblige, give him estimated costs in US$, however nothing happens until the funds are cleared in our account. he responds with:

Hey Julian,

Thanks for yor timely response and the price of your bmw is okay by me and i will like the car to be shipped to my customer's free port in Lome the republic of Togo. As regards per the payment, there is a customer of mine in the US that is owing me for the African foods i supplied him. I would instruct him to make out a check to you for $8,500, although the money is more than the value of the bmw but i am willing to trust you with the money. As soon as the cheque clears you can send my balance via the western union money transfer outlet nearest to you for immediate shipping arrangment cause i have contacted my shipping agent and he has agreed to arrange for the pick up from your location. If my terms is acceptable to you,do furnish me with the full name of the recipient, contact address and your phone number and get back to me immediately so that i can instruct my client to send the money to you as soon as possible.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Regards....

so now the alarm bells are getting pretty loud... my feeling is that we would get a cheque, but before it clears we get pressured to ship the car, or at least refund the difference between the cost of the car and the $8,500, and then the cheque would turn out to be a dud.

i've replied and asked for clarification about the shipping, because i can't work out from his message whether he wants us to pay his agent, or whether he is paying the agent - i bet he wants us to do it.. i've also asked him to have his customer pay him what he is owed, and then he can pay us what we are owed..

can't wait for the response!

will keep you informed - this could turn out ok, but right now it definitely smells very wrong...

Who would buy or sell something from the Republic of Togo :D

I think it is located next to the Republic of Zamunda with all the half dressed girls (from the movie Coming to America)

These things keep getting sent out normally from Nigeria so there must be some suckers in the world willing to get ripped off. take care of your bank account which is what they are really after.

This is a common scam - check your local police and they can give you details. What you predict is correct, you will be asked to ship the car either upon receipt of the cheque, or when your bank tells you it has cleared. There is a kind of loophole, where the bank will make the funds appear in your account (so it certainly looks like it has cleared,) but the cheque will later bounce and you will be liable for the amount.

hey hool...
i get these emails all the time asking me assist in money transfers to countries in sth africa, tongo etc. they are scams. not only to rip you off. but to get your id details and contact details. some even ask for bank details and personal info.
i wouldn't be devulging too much personal detail. there is already enuf info out there in cyber space to cause probs. once they start getting other details they start piecing the puzzle together.. such as ' youare?', 'your contact is?', 'your date of birth is?'. then all of a sudden its 'yes sir how can we asist?'. then you're is real trouble.

latest goss

man, i had to dig this out of the archives....

latest goss for anyone interested:
got another email saying that he needed an extra $15 USD to cover the additional shipping costs and it was a take it or leave it kinda deal.

i figured that 25 bucks would probably get me my gravel guards in the end cos otherwise i would have paid all that cash and only got half my stuff.

so the money is sent and i am waiting patiently.

hope that i didnt send that extra cash for nothing.

Pay Pal is the way to go

I work in cyberspace and have built many systems with ecommerce and have heard the tales from merchant rip-offs and bank-rip offs.

Check you credit card provider, some offer insurance on being ripped off.

Don't send money! - kiss it goodbye. It's gets lost, stolen or delayed.

Never pay online without seeing the secure padlock, and even if you do, email them to sus them out first to check their bank credentials. You can email Visa and query them as a fiar dinkum seller.

Buying from people...we start by thinking that most people are good...but some are not, and in overseas transactions, they often don't know what their local bank will slug them and so get sad when they find out. By them you're kinda screwed.

My advice, follow the crowd and use Pay Pal http://www.paypal.com.au  and pay them that way. Get their full bank account details too, that way if they screw you, you can trace them to an address to send the mail-bomb (kidding).

It's buyer beware....trust knowone, and if you're using a courier, try getting a COD option off them.
