Subaru turbo engine, Gearbox??

Hello guys,

I'm looking to buy a 72(ish)bay for a europe trip this summer. I'm not looking forward to any steep alpine passes with a 30 year old 1.6 in the back so have looked into the subaru 2.0 turbo install. I saw the adapter bellhousing in Practical performance car magazine and this looks like a really tidy way to put the engine in.
My only worry is the gearbox up to it? I've heard of people running the 1.6 box and being o.k. But does anyone have any true experience.

Cheers

Ben

The 3.88 single side plate is the strongest of the IRS boxes. Get welded 3rd and 4th gears and a superdiff. Mine has about 200kw at the wheels and for the last month I have been doing 50-100km a day(hard). No problems so far...stock cv's and drive shafts.

The 1600 72 bay GB has the wrong ratio for a subi (4.5?:1 I think). The motor would be doing 4000+ rpms at 100klms /hr. Get a 091 2 litre box and bolt it straight in.

Thanks Matt and Brendan.

I'm a little new to this VW scene! i'm guessing an IRS box is the type that is in all the rear engine flat 4 busses? Which model does the 3.88 single plate come from? 2litre?
I'm gonna be on a bit of a tight budget, so if a super diff is as expensive as it sounds this may have to wait! How much are they? What do you weld on 3rd and 4th, the bearing mounts? surely not the gears themselves?
I'm sure i can pick up a 2 litre box cheap(ish) in England so this might be ideal. What sort of RPM's can i expect at 100kph in 4th? The lower the better really for MPG.

So many questions!!

Thanks again

good luck in finding a 2l bus box, all the drag racers seem to be collecting them as they are about the strongest VW box out there so prices are on the rise...
