Muffler leak.....
Hey.... Anybody got any ideas.
I bought a new german standard muffler for my 71 beetle...
Goes great but leaks at the joins.... the bottom pipe that goes to the back cylinders... I have all new bits for it but leaks alot ????
Is there some sort of puttey or glue that can be used |

did u put gasgets on? were they good quality gasgets? the ones i took off my car were like a soft carboardy kinda gasget. i replaced them with metal
gasgets that that sandwiched carboardy mateirial in them.

the metal ones ive got are great. they compress when u tighten the bolts and the soft filling compresses to form a good seal with the metal.
id get new gasgets first. they arent expensive and maybe smear them with some gasget goo.

While your at it buy some loctite ultra-grey silicon and glue the gaskets and the exhaust on to your engine. I can guarantee it will outlast any
gasket, expecially on a standard engine. I don't use any gaskets at all on my exhaust header and it doens't leak at all. Just make sure your
flanges and heads are clean before you glue it all together and it will last as long as the german muffler.

Ok Mark
They are a pain in the bum those joints
The best thing you can do next time your motor is out is to get some one to weld a flange kit on there.
Why Mr VW never did is beyond me.
Anyway .... if not too late the wound stainless steel "washer" things are better than the "pressed fibre?" stock ones.
You "could" use hi temp silicone i guess on the inside where the "washer" pushes into the flared bit.
Another tip is to spead both sides of the clamp a bit so as it will pull down closer and tighter.
I mean where the bolt goes through on the "front and back" Flare these bits out
