I have the standard 1971 beetle air filter...the oil one... Can i change it to a air filter a normal one.. if so does it effect the tuning of the car,
and does it just bolt on with the hose clamps..
i saw a few of the at the shootout on sun... wanted to do the same. |

There is the cheap aftermarket chromed foam air cleaner which all VW aftermarket people sell....
chromed with the clamp.... Here is a photo of it...
You can also buy a proper oiled foam air cleaner like K&N etc... I am going to get one of these one day...

You should be able to get these (K&N) from any auto 1 store or go to the oz supplier Rocket industries in Sydney. And you do have to clean and reoil
them every month or so.We have one on a Baja that get driven on dirt roads every day.We clean and oil it about every three or four weeks.I actually
have a few and a filter sock so I wait and clean about 3 at once. Then when needed just oil and install.
cheers

we had a discussion about this very topic some time ago.
look at these unifilters. I had one on 1641 and it was tops.
http://unifilter.com.au/custom_pods.asp
the sort of filter the 68autobug has is not big enough to supply the engine properly and gets clogged very easily. I had one get clogged so badly
during a khanacross that the engine was choked of air and cut out intermitently when driven at anything less than 80km/h in 4th gear. besides all that
most of them are cheap and crappy.
btw, you'll need to put an oil breather on at the same time.
