Air Filter

I have the standard 1971 beetle air filter...the oil one... Can i change it to a air filter a normal one.. if so does it effect the tuning of the car, and does it just bolt on with the hose clamps..

i saw a few of the at the shootout on sun... wanted to do the same.

There is the cheap aftermarket chromed foam air cleaner which all VW aftermarket people sell....
chromed with the clamp.... Here is a photo of it...

You can also buy a proper oiled foam air cleaner like K&N etc... I am going to get one of these one day...

You should be able to get these (K&N) from any auto 1 store or go to the oz supplier Rocket industries in Sydney. And you do have to clean and reoil them every month or so.We have one on a Baja that get driven on dirt roads every day.We clean and oil it about every three or four weeks.I actually have a few and a filter sock so I wait and clean about 3 at once. Then when needed just oil and install.
cheers

we had a discussion about this very topic some time ago.
look at these unifilters. I had one on 1641 and it was tops.

http://unifilter.com.au/custom_pods.asp

the sort of filter the 68autobug has is not big enough to supply the engine properly and gets clogged very easily. I had one get clogged so badly during a khanacross that the engine was choked of air and cut out intermitently when driven at anything less than 80km/h in 4th gear. besides all that most of them are cheap and crappy.

btw, you'll need to put an oil breather on at the same time.
