Kombi Windscreen Rust


Here there fellow gluttons for punishment.

My Kombi has rust under the bottom of the windscreen - I know that this is a common place for rust.

Some of the metal has had it. Can you buy replacement sections to fit?

I'm pretty handy with a welder, so I would be capable of fitting replacement panels, if available.

Since its a common place for them to rust out - someone must have done or seen a good repair job.

your better off replacing the rust with Sheet metal and forming it to suit

I have to agree with crewcabconnection.Its very time consuming and difficult to get the curves and corners exact.An if you want your window to seal you want it close to original as possible.If you can find a suitable donor van go with that.
It definetly possible to form new sheet into shape but if you haven't done it before and haven't the tools required I'd start with something a little easier than a windscreen section.

crewcabconnection - whats a whole clip?

I'm a Maintenance fitter so i'm good on the tools but I dont fancy trying to form the sheetmetal.
A donor section sounds good but most of the steel at the bottom of the windscreen is a little dodgy so I'd like to do the full bottom. What would be my chances of finding a donor with a good rust free section??

The rear end is pretty sweet, but as you can see by the pic, the front is stuffed.
I can trade parts or buy a donor section if anyone has??

I have repaired rust in front screen area's and rear and side and just about everywhere on heaps of cars.

The rule is to just keep cutting back until you get solid metal. Then have a look from behind and make sure there are no bits rusted behind there too.

Like a lot of area's that rust you just have to take your time making the replacement sections from sheetmetal or old panel steel that is not rusty.

You can make a template first from cardboard like a cereal packet or biscuit box.

Yeah thanks helbus, i'll give it a go and see how bad it really is. The only thing stopping me is that once I take the windscreen out, there will really be no turning back. I know the rust is bad so getting it back in wont be an option.

By the way - your the man! I love what youve done with your (and yer wifes) van. Very nice engine job and bugger all pissing about:tu:

He He He. I just remembered last night we were coming back from a friends place and cruising next to a VR Commodore with some young fella's in it. One of them in the back was pointing and laughing at the bus. We were in an 80 zone in fourth gear and just ticking over at 70kph. I said to Fleur "look at these guys. Drop it back to third and floor it". She did and I was yelling to her "hold it flat hold it flat" We got to about 100kph with about 5500 rpm pretty quickly. Their eyes nearly popped out of their heads.

Needless to say we dropped striaght back to 80kph.
