should a new engine leak oil?
Hi
I have recently had professionally built a 1916 and done about 2000km so far, and when i turn of my car i leak a couple drops from my rear main. Just
wanted to know if this was normal for a new engine
Thanks
Sezer

could be a dodgy rear main. that's a pain as the motor has to come out but it's not serious.

You can damage the rear seals pretty easy if you have a bur on the flywheel
As well - people dont cange the O ring, and that can cause leaks.
Cam plug not glued in properly can stuff things and cause a leak
For good news - at least it is not leaking at the pulley end.
That would be crankcase pressure?? more than likely.
Pulling the motor, cleaning the flywheel, and replacing both the O ring AND the seal would be your best option.
See what you can negotiate with him on it

may be a crack in the case behind the fly-wheel, way beyond the control of the mechanic, did u ask for a 1916 ?
Did u specify a new crankcase ???
Tass I think u should calm down a little, I've no idea who's work your slagging but it's :alien bound to hurt some one.

Maybe not even the mechanic... have you been flogging it? The last engine got a bit of a hiding!

A freshly rebuilt engine that has been done by someone who knows what they are doing would be oil tight. Im afraid too many slack arse mechanics just
use the old "they are supposed to leak a little bit" excuse too many times. Its not right, take it back and get them to sort it. If they won't,
their scum and don't deserve your continued custom.

rear main oil leak
Normally one would not expect an oil from a recently o/hauled motor. But as soon as you get away from the normal set up size crankcase pressure
changes & can cause pressure at the most vunerable point. In this case I would suggest that you put up with a drop or 2 until the motor is fully run
in. Piston/ring blow by occurs with most new engines & until the motor has run some 5 to 7K & the oil changed a couple of times leave it. I have
expirenced the r/main leaking a few times with standard rebuilts & each time it cures itself. I would say to leave it until you have done at least 2
long trips & the warranty period is nearly up.It is not always the builders fault!

Thanks for all the advice guys.
i went to him because he knows what his doing, jak i did ask for a 1916 and it is still the same case which is not cracked, everything was done
properly by a professional vw mech. matt, The last engine coped a little hiding at the nats, wasnt too bad, it was the gearbox mount which i screwed
up then (which is why my engine was jumping everywhere and why it jumped out of first when i took off while i was racing the final:cry) which is all
good now i had a new solid mount put in, and i havn't been flogging it (havnt even taken it to the runs to see what ill do yet), i take it easy most
of the time and i did all the necessary wearing in just like the mech asked. louis its not pouring out only a drop or two. rob i'd have to say i
totally agree with you
Im due for an oil change, so i will wait a little as buzzamon suggested, probably wait until it'is due for next full service and ill take it back to
him to adjust the tappets and see what he says again about the leak. I have done a couple long trips, well depends what you class as long, i took it
to the south coast and enterance and a few other 2 or so hour trips. I'll let you all know when the time comes with what happens.
Thanks again all for the words of wisdom
