rat 72 t3 in the making
i thinks i am going to be asking a good few questions along the way on this one, but will hopefully be registered for DOVW (only 2 weeks :o )
will post some piccies tomorrow, but have just picked up a 72 t3 wagon. lots of engine work done to it a year ago, little bits of rust on passenger
roof, window corners, and a couple of patches needed, one in the inner wheel well and another in the floor, nothing too difficult. needs wheel
bearings tighteded, will chuch in the gas shocks and front seats from my notch, some retractable seatbelts, the windscreen from the notch, check the
brake pads (they feel good), fix some bad panel work on the passenger side. most of the bits and pieces are good on her, a steal for $400 i recon,
time will be the test though with dovw looming
for now, how do you get the panels off? do they 'pop' off?
who makes/sells/has a photo of a sticker to convert a 110mph speedo to kph?

For getting the panels off, they are bolted on, open the boot, remove the interior panels and under the small patches of material you will find the
bolts, as well as some along the bottom of the panel. You will need to remove the bumpers to get them off.
For the front, there are some bolts under the bonnet, on the inside of the cabin, by the doors and some again underneath.
Good luck mate! Hope you dont find anything too nasty under there!

well front guard is off, checked out the rust, should be easy as is in a small attached panel, got all the carpets and insulation out, floor is no
worse then i thought, got all the good bits off the notch and fitted them to the passenger door, so that one is now finished, not bad for a first 1/2
day. 10 days to go!
how expensive are carbs for these things? the ones on this one are pretty worn.

also noticed a couple of interesting features. doorhandles, i know my kombi's were completely plastic, the ones in the notch were chrome metal pulls
with plastic surrounds, but the wagon has chrome metal pulls with CHROME METAL SURROUNDS! is this normal? i have never seen/noticed it before on any
other dub?

Chrome metal surrounds are fairly common, both my fastys have them. This is the type of luxury you get as standard when you step up to a type 3.
If they are stock carbs, I don't know if you can even buy them new any more. I have been quoted $135.00 each for a professional rebuild.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

So you have a type 3 and a type 2, all you need is a beetle type 1 and you will be a real collector.
Be good to see it at DOVW if you can get it there.

hehe, wont be doing the beetle thing for a while i dont think.
well git the interior stripped, taken a good look at the rust, have a donor for the panels, bog in the small dints and rust (after cleaning and rust
removal of course), new guard on the rear, replacement scrapers up front (b!tch job), replacement door trims... she's getting there, should have all
welding done over weekend.

well shes ready for rwc tomorrow, welded the rust sunday, rustproofed everything, refitted the interior, rewired the horn, all the minor tinkering,
hopefully all will go well roadworthy tomorrow morning, will be having ball joints done at same time and after a test drive today probably some brake
adjustments as well (pedal requires more then expected effort, back pads good but need a tighten, definitely no leak anywhere)

oh no, that's no good mandy, was really looking fowards to that, ah well, at least my square will look like the perfect match to your bay if you
bring her.
yes i made it (by a breath). Ran to Ruckus' place to pickup some rims from him (left about 7:50am) but because of traffic didnt make it until it was
too late, so came back to the mechanic, found out that he couldnt get the ol' girl started, ended up having to rotate the leads 180deg (no3 in no1
spot, can any t3 person PLEASE explain this to me!?) got her purring, sprinted to Liza tyres in bayswater for a secondhand set of michelins, back to
the mechanic, fit the replacement rear seatbelts, get my rwc, straight home to pickup the other papers and $$ for the rego, out to dandenong for rego,
got there at 1:55 (10 min late for appointment) got the appointment anyway, got my plates, picked up lunch on the way back, got home, left to pickup
the Laser that i left sitting at the mechanics, rang my insurer on the way, got my cover transferred from my kombi to the type3, (got salvage rights,
$2800 market value (compared to the $1800 they were giving me for the kombi) vintage and vet comprehensive cover (instead of 3rd party fire theft) and
it cost me $50/year less then it was on the kombi, THANKYOU GIO), back home, and out to a concert, home finally at 11:30
still have some finetuning to do, front end alignment, clutch and brake adjustments, slow the idle a little, but overall she is a fun little beasty
for getting around in.
