Dual Cab Project (now 71 Panel DD Project)

I recently bought another 71 dual cab.. Hopefully I'll get started on the resto before Xmas and try and get it basically done by June next year.. This one is in Sydney so it will be hands on for me

I'll start by stripping and repair/replace any metal
Gut the interior and strip it back..
Retrim in light grey or cream (maybe leather).. Bucket seats front with a 2/1 folding seat in back..
Lower it a little
1916cc fully rebuilt (c/w crank, 110 cam, 043 heads)
2l gearbox
repair/replace canopy and tonneau
15" merc rims with VW domes
New chequerplate in lower and upper floors (I'm no traditionalist!)
Repaint in anthracite (hi gloss or metallic) grey..

I'll add to this thread during the rebuild..

here is a shot as she stands now and a selecta version of the final product

Because I used to have a 635CSi in anthracite grey and loved it.. However, I'm known to change my mind.. I like the idea of a colour with a bit of depth in it.. Finished in clear with a good gloss.. i thought it would look mighty fine!

Kimm always gets the cool stuff, still I spose that's what his shop is all about. ;)

How rusty is this new DC of yours? Big repairs or just the normal stuff?

Who was selling them?

What was the final price? It looked pretty good in the auction from what you could see.
Does it have a spare rear seat and pod? LOL Mitchell
BTW I just fitted a side step to mine . they are the goods. m

The one I earmarked for you is still in SEQ.. Bid delays on that project :-(

Ended up with 3 projects now.. a 71 DC, a 72 DC and a 71 Double Door Panel.. I'm pretty excited.. I love the 71/72 bays.. I already have a 71 DC which is driven daily so I might change plans and get the double door to the panel shop first.. I'm thinking the same treatment as I was going to do on the DC.. A cool grey (2005 VW passat colour), lowered, trimmed in cream, 1916 cc rebuilt motor. First thing is to strip it out and cut and replace all weak/rusty metal.. Probably the bottom 5 inches all round the van and the back RHS qtr.. looking forward to getting another project happening and "on-line for inspiration"

We both got a deal I like to think..
There are a few double doors around, but this one was all there and quite dry. Panels were straight except the rear qtr which will need a new section.. That is a good starting point.. I have a 76 bay panel that was refurbished.. the panels are all over the place.. So, if you can start with something that hasn't been chopped up and still has straight lines, you have the makings of a good looking resto..

Gotta luv Busselecta!!
I thought maybe add it into the work fleet.. That way I'd have a 71 DC and a 71 DD.. Good promotional value.. I am not sure whther to keep yellow (like the DC) or change to black (like the new VW caddy).. what do you think?

what about dark with a lighter roof, otherwise you're gonna bake in summer. BTW, is a 1916 gonna hack being used in a courier setup? be better with a 1640 I reckon.

It will only do promo work or very light duties Pete..We move freight, not strictly courier but a good point.. I have the 1916 ready to go.. After all I want to drive it for fun and (at the same time) justify the cost of the resto through the company..

By the way.. The 1835 in the old truck went for 20 + years doing heavy work most of the time.. It only failed because a main bolt came loose and cracked the main bearing seat.. Otherwise, she would be still pulling along.. These VW motors take a lot to kill.. (not that I am going to flog it).. Cheers
