Electric fuel pump problem
Hey all, i have installed an electric fuel pump not that long ago and now i cant seem to drive much faster then 90kmph! I can hit 110kmph on the
freeway but if i sit on that for about 10sec my car dies out (from lack of fuel) same deal if i sit on even 80kmph for lets say 30secs-ish. The car
runs fine if i plant it from 0 to 120kmph then it starves and stalls. Driving at low speeds i dont have any problems.
I have been told that the fuel pump is fine and can handle it, and that someone using the same pump has hit speeds of 180kmph + and has not had a
problem. I was also told to change the fitting in my fuel tank as it could be too small and doesnt let enough fuel into the pump as it is gravity
feed. I have done this, put a bigger fitting in and found some improvment but still same problem, only the car lasting a few seconds more at high
speeds. I have also lowered the pump more so the hose does not bend up at all (more holes drilled through my body )
I am about to put my old pump back on and thought id throw up a post to see if any one has any other options/experiences with this?
Also i was talking to a local mechanic (non vw) and he was saying how great the original vw fuel pumps are and that the eletric one wont make any
difference to performance and reliability. What are your opinions on this too?
so off with the new and on with the old??
your help/opinions will be appreciated

i run a rotary pump on chaos with no problems mate and the only reason for running it is the stock 2L pump hits the body in a bug. just a question is
the pump below the tank mate? also hows the state of the flexible line ie is it old cause they can disintegrate inside causing a lack of flow

The pump does sit lower then the tank, with all new fuel lines which dont bend up (direct down feed to pump)

Checked your fuel filter mate? Basic I know, but hey...
The fitting in the tank sounds bogus to me. If you got enough fuel with the mech' pump, the electric should get enough too. Unless the mech' pump
can indeed suck harder.
Don't know dude,
cheers, aurel.

Hi
What sort of pump is it? Some pumps are suckers and some pushers. Suckers need to be mounted near the carb and pushers need to mounted under the
tank.

Fuel filter is new and clean. Fuel pump is a pusher not a sucker. looks like i dont have much of a choice other then putting the old one back on and
ugly'in up my pretty engine bay :cry
I dont think it would make a difference that i now have a 1916cc, to me it seems like it pumps to slow, but othes say they have never had a problem
*confused* looks like it will going for sale soon (redeem some cash) maybe some one else can make some use of it. Do i have any offers in here? maybe
offers for my scat shifter too which i couldnt get working as discussed in http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=45604
Well thanks anyways guys

I'd wait until someone can have a look for you... I've never had an elctric pump that can't cope... Maybe it's in the carbs that the problem lays?
Could be one of the needles sticking and the bowls running out....? Electric pumps don't speed up with the engine it'll push to a certain
pressure.
Disconnect the line and switch on your ignition and see how much fuel pumps... there will be bloody heaps...

i can see how much fuel it pumps through the glass fuel filter, and it doesn't seem that fast to me. My carbs are still new but yes i know that
doesnt mean they wont give me problems. The bowls running out sounds right and the needles sticking? how does that happen and how can i find out?
I might take her round to klaack's on sat, and see what they say about it
thanks matt

I thought they were open half day sats coz i went there once on a sat (must of been a special sat)
Anyways just called them (they dont open sats), he thought my buggy was green, i said no gold he said same thing anyway to the point, they were heaps helpful, to break it down he said i should run a bigger pump
and regulator always running two pound pressure. also said that it will cost me about $250 might go back to old mechanical one until i decide to start blowing more money on things i dont really need.
to klaack
