It does depend on the intended application and also your budget. I run Koni red adjustable shocks all round in my 63 beetle (on 1970 swing axle pan) and love them. They are not cheap from memory though. I understand KYB have a fairly good reputationk and I know they did pretty well in a shock comparison test Volksworld magazine did quite a while ago. I am sure some others will put forward their suggestions too.

Braking system won't make a difference regarding which shocks you run (ie. drums or discs), however when ordering shocks you will need to know if you have a ball joint front end or king and link pin (earlier models), also if the rear is swing axle or IRS (however I have a feeling the shocks on the rear are the same regardless - just check this though.

The cost of the konis was not cheap in comparison to other brands - I can't recall off the top of my head what they were worth as it was over a year ago I bought them. I am not sure where you are based but it wouldn't be too hard to find a distributor - eg.

If you want a less expensive alternative, just give a local vw shop a call and get some costs for standard replacements. If you are running a stock engine, brakes, wheels etc - may not be necessary to spend so much on shocks alone. I am running a 2L engine, 4 wheel discs, modified suspension and bigger wheels - hence why I upgraded my shocks.

Cheers
Alan
