gearbox and engine..... why wont they line up.
Hey people.
can someone please tell me why i cant get my gearbox to line up with my engine. The engine is a 1300 running a 1600 bore etc and im trying to bolt it
into a 1969 Herbie. I can get the clutch plate to grab etc but cant push it that final 1/2 inch to match up plates. It wont bloody budge and its
annoying the heck out of me. Any ideas?

try changing the angle that you are putting it in on, jack up the rear of the engine a little and push, or try lower...
worked for me about a week ago. |

wats not lining up? is the motor not pushing right up against the gearbox?

make sure the clutch plate is centered other wise she wont line up.

nah i think they are all the same.
just thinking someone may have accidentally put on a clutch plate meant for something else.

Try this...
Could be the nose of the input shaft is off-centred a smidge with the pilot bearing. Have someone actuate the clutch a little and wiggle the engine a
bit.
I guess while you are at you could make sure the pilot bearing is OK inside the gland nut before you hoist the engine up there.
Just a thought...the clutch trick has helped me more than once with stubborn gearboxes in other cars (but then it was putting the gearbox onto the
engine!).

Once it's all lined up right it will go in....
but to make it easyer you may want to jack one rear wheel in the air, put the car into 1st. then as you gently push the motor turn the wheel. This
will help line the splines up.

are you using the right pressure plate/throw out bearing combo?
not sure by the info you have given, but if the gearbox has a little alloy sleeve held by 3 bolts covering the input shaft and your pressure plate has
the center ring installed, might be your problem.
also try adjusting the clutch cable right back/off

all i know is that the gearbox and engine have lined up. The spline on the gearbox is thru the clutch plate as i can spin the back wheels with the
vehicle in gear and it turns the motor over.
its the last half and inch that wont take up and no amount of rough treatment with encorage movement...
i'll try the clutch pedal and hope that moving the plates while trying to slide on will help things along...

no, this motor previously came out of a 1966 herbie, and as or the motor/clutch out of the 69 its gone into a 66 convertable!.....
hitlers revenge alright.

Have you tried backing off the cluch cable, the release bearing may trying to push on the pressure plate.

ahhhhhh.....now it sounds like you are trying to shove a 12 volt flywheel into a 6volt box and that AINT GONNA HAPPEN!
....you are going to have to get a die grinder with a carbide bit and clearence the bell housing of the box.....
before you do count the teeth on the flywheel and tell us if the box originally had short or long axles (swinger) or if it I.R.S...someone will help
work it out for sure with that info ......
i can get a piccy of where you need to clearence if thats the problem,
if you try to turn the motor at the point where you say it wont go any further, does it not turn/jams? if so pull the
motor out and see if there are teeth marks on the inside of the bellhousing.12 volt flywheels have a larger outside diameter than 6 volt ones
i think we've sussed it now

Don't talk too loud or my Notch may hear you! It has a 12 volt flywheel and nothing had to be carved from the 1964 belhousing whatsoever. Best
check if the input shaft has that extended shield as someone previously mentioned fouling with the clutch centre ring. It may need removing or most
of it parted off to allow faces to mate. After all these years, very little may be left standard so the year of manufacture may not apply.
