74 beetle front gearbox mount replacement

Hi, I am the new owner of a 74 beetle with a Type 1 gearbox. I have it for my 15yo daughter, waiting a couple of years for her licence!
My "mechanic" has been trying to remove the front gearbox mount to replace it, but can't quite get it out of the car. He now thinks that the motor & box have to be removed to change the mount. Is this true? It seems unbeleivable!
Also, I want to buy a workshop manual.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Stu from Townsville

This is probabally the best one
"How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive : A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566913101/102-5126409-9844965?v=glance&n=28...

As for changing it "in situ"

possible but........

You would have to drop the rear mounts to the 2 horns

here is also a brilliant on line manual

If i remember correctly, basically need to remove engine and gb and slide back a few inches.

I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
