Newcastle to Melbourne Roadtrip/DOVW pics (finally)
Finally got home last night after a week away, time to get some pics up.
Well it all began earlier this year when Adam C and I decided we needed to get down to Melbourne for Jamboree. Unfortunately we couldnt get our shit
together in time so we saw DOVW as our second chance. We initially intended on taking a normal car with a VW in tow, but as the day drew near we
decided to drive both our slammed bugs on the 2000km round trip. Were we asking for trouble?
I left Newcastle thursday morning and from the start i was doomed.
Id just picked up my Happy Meal at the F3 twin servos drive thru and as i pulled out of the driveway a hwy patrol car came racing up behind me, lights
flashing. I pulled over and as soon as i got out he was screaming at me. I managed to sweet talk my way out of getting the car towed and impounded for
being 'dangerously' too low. wat a great start to the trip! 5 minutes down the road i was pulled over again at tuggerah by an undercover hwy patrol,
but luckily it was a random breath test. because of a few hiccups the trip to sydney took me over 3 hours!
i stopped off at my girls place in randwick on my way to adams, and wen i left i forgot my wallet inside. i had to wait in the car for 4 hours before
she got home from work to let me in. not happy.
so now its after 9pm when i leave for the 1 hour trip to adams house. well the wetaher decided to make my night worse and i get pelted with rain, not
much good in a lowered oval with fucked up toe in on one rear wheel and a lack of wipers. after fishtailing down the hwy and almost losing it
completely, i crawl along in the emergency lane and decide to pull over at a truck stop. the rain doesnt stop and i spend the night sleeping in my
car. very unhappy.
the next day started off much better, got to adams at 530am and get a couple of hourse sleep in a warm bed. the weather cleared by lunch and we fixed
my suspension troubles. we loaded up the cars and headed off for melbourne...

Adam checks out an exhaust leak somewhere in the middle of nowhere...

urgent roadisde repairs takes place in the sweltering sun and the flys begin to swarm...

2 hours later and we're back on the road

something nice i found...

some truck drivers are complete assholes, one almost killed the 2 of us with his dangerous driving...

road to Gundagai

cruising...

Friday night in Holbrook, setting up the tent just before the big storm hit!

Aftermath...

hotrod show
"um, this is a chev show not a VW show"
no shit dickhead...

you see the sweetest things on your travels

crossing over into Victoria in a convoy

watering the heater boxes, as you do...

YEAH! we made it to Yea

Finally made it to Stealth's place, wat a lovely sight...

Nothing quite like having a beer in the back of a 57 panel after a long drive (happy Mo-vember by the way)

Later that afternoon after detailing the cars with Jim Gow and Stealth, we headed round to JNR356's place for a lil get together...
Mark and Damo Kustomkool fitting "the Gold Tooth"

um, nice garage...

um, nice view from your pool table...

um, nice VW Barn in your backyard...

Loading up, ready for DOVW

Damo + Mark, Akean and Adam driving my car on the way to DOVW

"is it bagged?"
"yeah, sand bagged..."

My "Old Skool Ooonce" Off the Wall, best album...

this car was too much for me to handle...

Bugboy, Stealth and Jim Gow's rides

Hoodride Corner

Loved the Hertz car

Akean's new pinstriping and stencil

they call him "Gold Tooth": Kustomkools ride...

Ruckus' Fatty

We were lucky to get a ride in a piece of Aussie VW history, Rhetts Cuntry Buggy

the Hoodride Australia photoshoot

as u can imagine i hav a tonne more photos, but im sure u can already see wat a great time we had. the trip home was nice and un eventful, but we did
get a tip off about some early rust free ovals and splitties we will suss out soon.
I think we made the best decision taking both the Beetles. we had so much fun just dirving these old machines, and isnt that wat its all about?
Victoria rocks, and for so many reasons.
once we crossed the border the first thing that became obvious was the quality of their roads. for most it wouldnt matter, but in a Beetle with no
suspension it is a god send, like driving on glass. NSW has something to answer for.
The show. best show ive been to so far, quality of the rides, variety of styles, laid back atmosphere and the only time the Rim police had to be
called was for a NSW car! We had a great time.
and lastly the people. dont want to sound like a toss but never hav i felt so welcome within the VW community. I dont have a bad word to say about the
VIC crew, met so many great people at the show, people genuinely interested in the rides and hardly any shit talking. defintly be back there next
year. I recommend it to all.
I need to give a big thanks to Anthony Stealth, Jim Gow and Mark JNR356 for their awesome hospitality. Was also great to put some names to faces and
hang out with some cool people: Kustomkool, Akean, Nathan, Mr Bubblehead, Josh, Ruckus, Rhett, EmpiKG, Damien Kornkob, Dean grey57 and anyone else i
may hav forgotten.
and thankyou adam, for being a friend (bring on the 'Golden Girls' theme music) hahahahaha

Great pics and and excellent adventure Sam. I now how much fun it is driving an old oval on a long trip. Drove my old oval up to Valla a couple of
years ago and had a ball, Breakdowns, Semi's tailgaiting me and all. That trip was something I will never forget. Was good to catch up with you
again. That barbed wire and bridge shots are excellent. See you at the Nats next year.

Hey I totally agree Sam. You would have been a shoe in for longest
distance travelled, if there was a prize for that. I was kinda surprized that there was no People Choice award too.
Hey I will be driving the Ghia to the Nats for sure. Starting to save for the petrol now. Cant wait:thumb

That was one of the best threads I've read.
That's what it's all about, and after that start you had to the trip....man you've got big cahuna's, both of you!
So pissed i didn't get to meet up with you guys.
I reckon there'll be a strong Victorian contingent for the Nats next year. Not gonna miss it again.
Great stuff.

What was the cop hassling you about, and how did you talk your way out. There's no way you're below 10 cm clearance?
