Starting my 1300 Beetle

Hey all,

Trying to start my beetle, it has been sitting around for a couple of years.
I was told the engine the engine was siezed but I can get it to turn over (Put a little diesel into the cylinders to make sure they were lubed up properly).
I was told that the engine might have a problem with the oil pump but this is not a problem at the moment.

So I can turn her over but it wont start.
Battery is New.
Sparkplugs are new.

I know thinks which I could replace to probably fix the problem (like the dizzy coil etc) but with having very little money I want to source the problem before spending any more money.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Richard.

check points, rotor button, coil and condensor.

take the air filter off and look down the throat. now pull the accelerator arm can u see fuel sqwirting in?

does it try to fire? spluttering or just nothing?

hmmm - we have a 1300 beetle (incidentally, the best kind - even Mr Muir agrees) and have come across all manner of troubles.

Firstly, it is an emotional machine and it does help when you spell it's name correctly... all jokes aside ...

I would firstly check that there is spark from the coil. Turn on the ignition, free the cable running to the center of the coil and point the bare metal of the cable at the engine block - verging on touching - and turn the engine clockwise from something approaching top dead center to a couple of inches past it (using a spanner on the generator nut). At some point there should be a spark. If there's none, then you're coil is fucked - and you need to spend 30 bucks.

If this is ok check the orientation of your spark leads. From the top of the distributor in a 1300 beetle (note the spelling :)) it's low right on the dizzy to top right cylinder - 1 - (facing the front of the car from the back), then top right posn on the diz. to low right cylinder - 2 - then top left to top left and bottom left to bottom left.

You might also check that the cable from the coil to the distributor is connecting at both ends.

Make sure that the rotor in the distributor is pushed right down, and that the points aren't burnt out. If you can, put in a new condensor and new points and set them up right.

I'd also set up your valves, make sure they're ok. Doesn't take that long - a lot less long than your bug might not run if you don't get it right.

Take off the air filter.

Take the fuel hose off the carby and have someone pump the accelerator - is there fuel?

If there's fuel and spark you're away.

Maybe you're fuel pump is F*&%$jed?

You should be able to get it going.

Oh, and one more thing.

We had a 1300 beetle in the shed for two years (now running beautifully).

The diaphragm in the vacuum advance was ... gone. I sucked on the vacuum hose and instead of moving the internals of the distributor I got a mouthful of musty crap.

We replaced the distributor with a mechanical advance distributor, about $150.

The car has never run so well.

Had we not changed it over the car would be running terribly on high revs and damaging the guts of the engine. Check yours before you drive too far.

That's when you get it going ... ;)

Good luck.

Tom

If the motor has been sitting for a while you should start with the basics.
- Pull plugs and check compression. - Even on all good. Dead on a one or two no good. Squirt engine oil in dead cylinders and re-check - If the compression comes back then its probably rings. If not then its something else possibly valve gaps.

- Check all valve clearances and set to .006 - If compression was low or zero in the above test then re-check.

- If you cant get compression in all cylinders then you might as well stop here.

- If compression check out ok then continue.
- Replace cleaned spark plugs.
- Replace spark plug leads in the correct order. Double check as its easy to get no 1 and no 3 in the wrong order.
- Set points gap to spec.
- Static time to spec.
- Crank engine to check for spark. Got spark at the coil and plug leads then all is sweet.

- Pull the top off the carbie and clean out all the old fuel and gunk thats in the bowl.
- Pull and clean out all the jets.
- Pull out and clean the float valve and float.
- Re-fit all the carb bits the same way they came out.

- Check fuel pump - Disconnect the fuel line at the carbie.
- Remove the coil wires to prevent a spark. Crank engine with the free end of the fuel line in a bottle to check fuel delivery. No fuel then check all lines and filters. If they are OK. The pump could be stuffed.

- Fuel being delivered ok - Sweet reconnect the fuel line back up.

- If all the above is good then it should fire up.
- But before you do I would at this time change the oil and clean the oil pick up screen.

- If all is good and it still not starting, get a can of Start Ya Basterd and spray it in the carb as someone cranks the motor over. When it catches dont rev it too hard, just enought to keep it running and get a little bit of heat into it and burn away all the crud in the cylinders.
- A good 12 volt battery is handy too.

Good luck.

Thanks hehe ;)

Thanks everyone still trying to work out the problem but will keep you informed. Think its the combination of coil and fuel pump but see how we go.

She's alive.
Woahahahaha!

Got her going yeah.
Running rough but I now know her problems.
The bettle comment was probably one issue she had.
hehe ;)

Very happy. We are now on our way.

Richard.
