Oil splattering out? :(
I have just started driving my bug on the weekend and I am having a prob with the oil kind of splattering out and leaving splatter marks all over the
inside of the engine cover and a puddle underneath when I stop. It looks as though it's coming out of the from pulley (whateva it's called) where
the timing belt is. My bf thinks it could be the oil cooler?
Can anyone help

Oooh and I have been checking the oil level every day and it hasn't gone down at all!

Hi what year is your bug ? if its an air cooled cheak the oil level and make sure its not over full.
if it's a water cooled with a timing belt I have no idea...

best thing to do is clean the engine thoroughly , then run it on the spot until u see where it is coming from exactly. if it is from the front pully,
then u should remove and check the colar that slides into the case. Also at idle remove the oil filler cap and check for excessive blow bye. has the
engine got a breather type filler neck.???

as above says - blow by / crank case pressure.
If it is coming out from behind the pulley it will be crankcase related.
Doesnt take that much oil to make a complete mess. It is a fine mist that is soming out.
It is a stock 1500sp???
Was never apart during the rebuild???
Do you have the oil breather off the filler hooked up to carb/air cleaner???
Check that the breather is not clogged up.
Otherwise it is rings = top end rebuild time

meant also to say that a blocked/restricted oil cooler or stuck oil pressure relief springs/pistons could cause it.
How hot did this motor get on your drive??
How much did you ....... ummm.........thrash...no, no..sorry, I mean "test" this new car???
Not suggesting at alll that you ...... may have ...... unintentionally revved the crap out of it....... but sustained hooning could also cause
excessive oil spray

Hey guys, thanks for your comments so far. The bug is a 1968 Beetle and we haven't rebuilt the engine at all. And I haven't taken the bug above
80kp/h for fear that because of this oil problem something worse might happen.
I don't have all the details you guys have asked but I will get Kevin to have a read of this tomorrow and he can tell you exactly whats happening.

Sometimes the seals can be faulty and if it was damaged putting it in, (which I have seen happen) it would do pretty much just as you've described...
I know this because I have had the same problem some years ago..
It sounds like it's gotta come down to that or a dud seal or split in the case...
I hate to admit it, but man, I think you're right....

when you say you have a new pulley...please tell me it's not a small alloy one ? If it is then get rid of it. It probably cracked and leaking…if
not it will, and will make the engine over heat.

I just had the same problem with the kombi... breather hose had come off the thingamywhatsit and the thing was blowing oil out the dispstick. I put
the hose back on and used hoseclamps and everything is merry again. |
