1970 bay Kombi with a black eye at damaged vehicle auction.. is this a worthwhile buy

One of the forum members pointed out this damaged early bay Kombi due to be auctioned at the salvage aucctions in January...

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=47297

if I manage to get some money by then, would this bus be a worthwhile prospect?

It appears to be in rather good nick with nice paint and no rust that I can see. I assume that it is probably unregoed now... being a salvage item.

The only visible damage seems to be the boxed in front quater and either a buckled door or buckled front pillar... I assume the former as thew windscreen doesnt appear damaged.

It would apear a simple job to fix the front end body damage... just some aggressive panelbeating and maybe some bog .. and some new paint of course. Would this indeed be the case? is there any possibility of serious undercar (steering/susso') damage?

Supposing this was a worthwhile resto job... how much would you guys pay for it supposing you were seriously in the market for an early bay... ie how much is she worth one paying dya reckon? (serious answers only please.. no rediculous "HAHA... THAT???? 5 DOLLARS!!!! HAWHAW!!!!" idiot answers... somebody always does it)

I'm definitely considering getting a small-engine early bay (with tehlow blinkers, small intakes and small tailights) as soon as I get enough money to do so... and they seem to be rare in this condition (all accident damage aside). :)

Cheers!
Kieran

new front panel, rust repair section, new door, and maybe a section of floor and a bit of beating/welding and painting id say she'd be right as rain maybe...

Most auction cars are moved around on a forklift, so look for underbody fork damage, especially front steering tie rods.

In regards to the accident damage check out the Y shaped front sections of the chassis.

If you have to ask how to build a house...maybe you should employ a builder

But: Looks like a quick tug on the os front would get it close to straight or do a cut n shut. Both would be less than a grand at 'mates rates'

Thanx so far lads... :) So it looks like I am right in thinking that it is a pretty easy fixer...

Didnt know about the forklifts and shit tho Peter... how reckless and idiotic.. GRRR! Tanx for letting us know about that :thumb

So... what would be a reasonable price to pay for this baby? ANy idea wht kind of bids may be put on it... taking into account pluses such as overall condition and minuses such as the damage and presumed lack of rego?

Yep I think I'll start saving some nice smelling green plastic stuff and see about going up there to have a look... if she hasnt got any serious chassis or steering damage I reckon she's a good prospect for getting back on the road... just have to wait and see how teh finances turnout by then.. ;)

Oh well, thganx for your thoughts lads and especially manx and Helbus for the 'fo on prices and FORKLIFTS (!!!!!).

I'll let you's know if I get her or not... :)

PS. I hate being poor.
