Mk3 Golf GTI

Does anyone know whether the '95 2 litre GTi had a 8v or 16v head?? Any in Australia would have to be privately imported, I'm guessing as I can't find any info on any of the sites about the GTI from about '92 through to '98. I know that they don't have a really good reputation as a 'hot hatch' but if they came with all the fruit (ABS, dual airbags, electric everything) I'm willing to take a chance on one.

Any info re the above much appreciated.

I can't help you Doug, but like you, I would be willing to take a chance on one.

My mate has a VR6 which is 96, and that has a fair bit of 'fruit', such as leather, electrics, airbags, etc.

Good luck.

Yeah, no GTI's in Australia from the Mk3 run. In Europe they had 8V's and 16V's. They were not really fantastic as hot hatches, but with decent suspension should go great. Our Vento has better suspension, and it is great... nearly.... Thing to remeber is that the 8V GTI's had the same motor as our 2.0L Golfs. A lot of the later model ones had a lot of safety features, and with a decent set of wheels and suspension, would be the equal of a genuine euro spec GTI. A 16V would be great, but very hard to find. I found a Toledo 16V the other day, and that is the same engine. All up, Mk3 is a lovely drive, but not worthy of the GTI badge. (IMO)

I also have a later mk 4 1.6, is sooo slow compared to the mk3, would take the mk3 with suspension and wheels over the mk4 any day...

Haha. The Vento has those exact same wheels!!!

As for the Mk4 vs 3 comment, the 2.0 Mk4 is a fine drive. But the 1.6 is slooooooooooow.

Yeah, figured as much, the 1.6 was cheap and is a good run around with all the cons and is amazing on fuel economy

Cant wait for the supercharged and turbocharged 1.4L 16V FSI. 170 odd bhp, and small engine revving and economy!!!! Small engine means nicer front end handling too!!!

I got some VW stickers made up for the centres of those wheels, and they look hot... Cost about $50 at a rubber stamp place, but look the biz.
