T4 wisdom

It looks like I'm going to go water cooled.....:puke

I'm looking at a 93 Caravelle, but I've never had anything to do with them.
Anyone want to tell me what to look at? Where are the trouble spots? What noises I should listen for? Shit like that.

I got a 96 2.4 diesel 5 cylinder single cab. I got it cheap with 105000 on it, got a good checkover and showed up $2000 worth of service and repair items. Starter motors are weak, they slog out the bush in the gearbox, new starter had been re engineered to take out this fault. The dash electrics seem a bit suss on a few aswell with instrument clusters a real hard find second hand. Same as gearboxs, mine has now 155000 and the box has a few issues. The Diesels top out at 130kmph aswell, even though thats over the speed limit at 110kmph they are reving fairly hard. Fuel economy is good if you can leave it at 100 kmph tops. They are good daily drivers and it gives my aircooled stuff a break for the weekend.

A little more info;
2.4 litre petrol, manual. Just short of 280,000 kms.
Surely at that sort of mileage anything that couldhave gone wrong would have already.

t4 wisdom teeth! 93 model caravelle will have a few items to look out for ....if this vechile has been run on PULP the exhaust manifold will survive the test of time, non factory fit air con systems will be a constant source of grief...retro fit a factory nippon system which are by far the more reliable unit....autos can be a issue but most have had a rebuild these days 10-11 years on.check g/box mounts in the auto as these wear..check if regular cam belt services have been preformed along with replacement of cam and crank seals to avoid oil leaks....rear brakes are solid...very rare to even replace linings after 200k's....visual checks on water fittings at the cylinder head..these are plastic and can crack..but are cheap to buy....if its a manual check the gearbox oil level ..this is the most common fault in the t4 range as many boxes run dry ....overheat and become noisy..in general these are a tough van ..solid reliable and best of all SAFE....stick the jap crap where it belongs....go with the original people mover and keep the faith...hope this helps a bit cheers steve

engine in wrong end, oil filters impossible to change without making a mess, spark plugs pain in the arse if bullbar fitted, heavy buggars, nobody will wave, be careful backing into parking spots, they are a lot wider, much more comfortable and car like than your old truck, impossible to rebuild on a valla campsite. Wouldnt mind one myself.

Doublecab- My 1998 Caravelle GLS has 280K on the clock....and as strong as the day it came from the factory.....

has got another 200k in it before I look for a rebuild....just like the Taxi Caravelle that goes between Threadbo and Jindabine....had 500k on it about 2yrs ago....or the Synchro Ambulance running up that way as well....all with very high klm's.....and going strong....just one thing...do all your belts (engine bay) around the 200K mark...will save you a rebuild if the timing belt goes...

Some people are like Slinkies . . . not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

So ya reckon grab it & let the chips fall where they may.

Fact is, I bought my bay knowing sweet FA about it, to the point where my neighbour had to show me where reverse was. 15 years & a hell of a lot of kms down the track, there isn't one bolt on it I'm not familiar with. I help others with theirs now.

I know this thing is cheap, I've yet to see one under 10k, & for it's age it's imaculate cosmetically.

BUT; theres a lot more spandoolies involved when one of these pops it's cork. Being cheap don't make it a bargain.

If they are half as reliable as the bays, I probably can't go wrong.

Maybe the wife is right, that I was always gunna go for this & I'm just trawling to find someone who agrees with me..

What coolant was in it? I'm not sure why, but with T3's you have to use VW coolant which is very expensive. You ordinary wynns coolant isnt good enough. Seen a couple of t3's that had coolant additive in them but still corroded head studs and pitted the water jacket metal. Not much you can do then other than cross fingers ad hope for the best.

There's 2 types of VW coolant... blue and pink. Dont recall which one goes in what vehicle.

guys the coolant to use now is G12+ it has a facotory rating which ia much higher than the G11 and std G12. all petrol T4 engines are interferance free when a cam belt lets go..only the diesel has the valves hitting pistons if the belt brakes .dont agree with all the thoughts regarding T3 coolant issues. firstly its not expensive to buy G12+ The T3 engine is the best flat 4 vw ever built..bar none.....all issues stem from maintance ignorance or poor fuel..........education is the key and when these babies were new only a hand full of dealers ever got the ducks guts...TKM have a lot to answer too for all VW owners incliuding the parts pricing structure.....we payed thru the nose when the factory wasn't involved...any way enough of a whinge..doublecab be sure to clean your throttle body on a semi reg basis..this is particular for engine codes AET...use a good grade fuel to avoid maniflod cracks..regular oil changes espeacially if you are a low mileage driver...every 6 months....check g/box oil level and you shall see many more thousands of k's under your belt....when u r ready try a T5 it will blow your socks off...just when you thought how much better can they get cheers steve

OK, so let us say my bank loves me (should know by tomorrow), & I grab this.

Premium unleaded is the fuel, g12+ is the coolant.
What's the engine & gearbox oil??

Turned out to be less than I hoped for.
So as of Friday I will be the proud owner of a '90 T3.
