Sadly not.

Rick Feruglio is a nice guy and he works very hard. But unfortunately the 'Volkswagen Club of NSW' is nothing of the sort. They are a Group 7 rally club whose members own Datsun and Mazda rally cars. They began as a VW club in the 1955 but later opened membership to owners of all marques. By the late 1970s there were almost no VW owners in the club.

That's why Club Veedub and Flat Four were started in the early '80s - to cater for VW enthusiasts only. I don't want to be critical of NSW VW Club, it's just that they have very different interests and priorities from us. It's a free country I guess.

Seeing as the Nationals would have to be the biggest VW affair - certainly in Sydney.

Doesnt this sort of clash? :jesus

Yes Blue it does clash, but it was fixed nationally over 20 years ago... It moves around the country state by state every year.

Continues to draw good numbers in every state...

Longer ago than that, in fact. The first Bug-In was run in 1971 in Victoria, and involved only the NSW and VIC VW clubs of the day. The following year the SA VW club attended, and 1973 was the first 'all states' Bug-In. You can read the old VW club magazines at the State Library of NSW - that's where I read up the history of it. My copies only go back to 1982.

In the late '70 and early '80s, when I belonged to the NSW VW club, they were not a 'VW' club in today's sense. There were no show n shines, no judging, no swapmeets, none of the stuff we do today. In those days, the VW club ran dirt motorkhanas, khanacrosses and other dirt racing events. They also hosted a round of the Group 7 forest rally series.

I was one of the event directors at the 1984 Bug In in Sydney. I still have the program at home. It involved a navigation run on Saturday and a dirt motorkhana on Sunday. There was no VW show. In fact of the 20-odd cars that came along, only three were VWs (including mine). This compared VERY poorly with the first VW Spectacular at Nambucca Heads, which happened later that same year. It was really the first of the 'modern' VW shows.

The poor showing of the 1984 Bug In as a 'VW' show was the cause of a split in the NSW Club the following year, when a few of us pure VW fans set up Club Veedub. Since then, the two clubs have followed their own different paths. We have combined the Nationals with the Bug In before, but this year it didn't happen. It doesn't matter - Sydney has over 4 million people and there is room for both events at Easter.
