1960 Beetle engine

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if 40hp engines were originally installed in some 1960 beetles? I have read a bit about the era and my understanding is that 40hp engines started in 1961, but another source said they started in late 1960. Now I'm just confused! :duh

Also, does anyone know of an engine and VIN number decoder?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance :D

The '61 model Beetles started in August '60,
This was the first of the 40hp engines.
