clutch not working
I have a prob with my clutch on a 67 beetle.
At the moment it feels like there is no clutch, like it is all freeplay. The clutch lever on the tranny is moving as the pedal is depressed, correctly
I think. The freeplay adjustment wingnut was already at max tightness, so I tried sticking on a nut to give me extra tighning ability. Now when the
pedal is depressed, and the clutch lever is moving a bit further there is a loud screeching.
I can't put it in gear while the engines running.
Any ideas?

you can over adjust the clutch,and you might have popped the thrust bearing out of its holder which means an engine out job

Maybe one arm of the clutch fork has broken off the shaft. Not uncommon on some models as they weren't welded too well.

ok, thanks for the info, looks like I have to pull the engine.
I haven't done it before, so I'll get to investigate what goes on in there.

if you have to take the motor out, you might as well cut the back bodywork off and turn it into a baja so that any future motor
tuning/adjustment/servicing and removal and stuff is like 10 seconds work...
(joke guys, joke..)

Well, I'm not joking, cut it... Make a nice Baja out of it.
But with the clutch, have you tried looking at what the components are doing with two people? You can really benifit from having a second person there
to operate the clutch while you see what's actually happening, while it's happening.

I am in the exact same situation with my 63. What you have described is exactly what happened to mine the other day.
The local VW mechanic had a quick look at it and he thinks the clutch fork has broken. From what 1500s and many others have said, its a reasonably
common problem.
See my thread titled "$250 labour + parts for a clutch fork replacement??" for a bit more info.
I am considering repairing mine myself and i would be interested in hearing how you go and what issues you come accross.

Could also be the clutch hook on the pedal cluster broken or torn away
