Dual brake circuit
Hi all,
I understand the principal behind the requirement for a dual circuit master cylinder.
I currently have a dual circuit master cylinder out of a combi. It has dual resivour on top of the cylinder. This is what I am after as I want to keep
the standard filling resivour.
I think I able to get the master cylinder to fit I am wondering if anyone know of a different dual master cylinder that is going to fit better.
I have a 64 beetle.
I will post a pic of the master cylinder that I have.

are the kombi dual circut cylinders the same as the later superbug ones? i think the beetle cylinder is usually used.

From memory the Kombi cylinders aren't threaded where they mount up and have a larger cylinder bore(22mm I think)than the 19mm of the Beetle.The
missing threads are OK,just use longer bolts with nuts.The reservoirs on top of the cylinder would be a pain to fill up-so much easier to get a
cylinder from a late Beetle and fit the reservoir under the bonnet somewhere.Fitted mine in the original location,used 4 short pieces of original
rubber hose for joiners and some black hard plastic brake hose for the rest.

You are right it is not threaded. However I was, as you said, just going to use longer bolts and a nut. I am going to put the original resivour back
and connect it up to the master cylinder resivours so I only have to fill up at one point.
I am trying to get a solution that will work this way.
I am just wondering if there are beetle master cylinders with resivours on top that will be a better fit?
Also being a larger bore is that going to alter stopping/handling drastically? e.g. more prone to lockups?

I don't know of any dual circuit Beetlle cylinders that had the reservoirs attached to the cylinder.With the bigger bore you will have slightly
higher pedal effort and less travel than the original.I fitted a Beetle dual circuit cylinder to a 356 Porsche and the owner didn't want any changes
under the bonnet-so I had to make a "Y" piece to put in the filler hose.Only problem with this is,if you have a failure in one circuit,you cannot
quickly tell which one has failed and you could end up as bad as having the original system,because of not having seperate chambers in the
reservoir.He had an experience previously in an old beetle with a brake master cylinder failure and didn't want to damage the front of his Porsche as
well.As I said B4-just get a new one for a late Beetle which comes with the plastic fluid fittings,is a straight fit,is the correct bore size and you
could make up something for the filler setup.
