Didn't your ATF light come on?
Damien,
On your A/S if the ATF temp gets to 125 C in 2nd or 140 C in Hi (maybe the other way around...) your ATF light in your speedo should have
been on.
Couple of cheap checks.....
Is the ATF/Oil pump scorching hot?
Is the steel pipe from the tank to the ATF pump riding on part of your exhaust?
Is the converter scorching hot? There's two openings you can poke a finger through to check..
Gearbox excessively hot?

The ATF light - on right side..
Damien,
Not having seen a 68 speedo, but I have a 70, and 71 and the ATF light is between 80 and 90 MPH. In fact it has "ATF" next to it.
According to one of my manuals (covers 68/69 stickshifts) the wire to the light should be blue with red bands......check where the wire goes...If
indeed it is your ATF temp warning.....you have a problem. I'm assuming you weren't driving along for kilometres in Range 1....
If your ATF pump seems OK, you could (cheap first!!) disconnect your hoses (if you do the steel feed line you'll have to drain the oil tank) and blow
them out to see if there is a blockage (watch where you point those hoses!). While your hoses are disconnected, take the temp senders out and see if
there is any garbage on the ends and in their respective bellhousing holes.
If I can think of any other cheap driveway checks I'll post 'em.
Ahh...just remembered...is your weber properly tuned yet?? You may be running your motor hot and the S/A parts are copping residual heat...just a
thought....
