Not too sure, a guy at work about a year ago said something about needing to own the vehicle for 1 year before being able to move it ove to Australia from NZ as people were using NZ as a stop over for imports to avoid costs and imports of some sort...
Not too sure to be honest and I'm only going from someone else's chatter which probably isn't correct.

You could probably call the RTA and ask them what the deal is. They'd know who to call if they couldn't answer the question.
If you find out, let me know.
