68' Beetle w/ pics

More a question of what they're worth; i've found a red 68 Beetle in NSW that's all original. No rust, original red paint, unregistered and motor is leaking oil in someones driveway currently. They're asking $2k.

I haven't really got anymore info than this as i'm still investigating it myself (and being overseas doesn't help).

Is it at all possible to give me some kind of gauge as to what I should be getting for $2k?

update: added some pictures.

Sounds like a pretty bloody good deal for 2K mate... I'd snap it up!

A friend recently bought a complete rustfree flatscreen Beetle in pieces with a good 1200 motor and a crap 1500 for 3000 bucks.

If this Beetle is rustfree and mechanically sound, rego shouldnt be a prob, so well worth it I reckon... but I'd check out that oil leak though to make sure its not coming from a crack in the crankcase... if it is you may be up for a new or second hand motor or an expensive rebuild. If it is all original, I assume that means the engine is too... so the above scenario is possible.

reasonable to very good secondhand donks seem to be around the 400- 800ish bucks mark on here. :)

Also, check for rust in the floorpans particularly around the battery area.

At worst you may end up spending up to 3000-5000 on it to get it where you want it, depending on the condition it's in.. but 2000 sounds like a good deal...even if a new donk (or half a donk) is needed! :tu:

BTW, I'm not by any means a Bug authority, so ask around the bug-owners for anything else to watch out for...

Hope it goes well for you,, and welcome to our posse!

Get some pics of...

Hi,
Since you're OS, have you seen pics of the A & B pillar joins down at the heater channels? As schmoburger stated, the battery trays can be nasty. Front and rear aprons in good shape? Front and rear window seals shouldn't have any evidence of sealer.

If you have a mate who can visit, get 'em to poke and prod around the guards where they join the running boards and into the rear section of the front wheel wells.

Enjoy

It was purchased at Lismore, fires up and runs smoothly, but yeah - nice oil scum everywhere.

I think my legs being pulled on original paint as I can see overspray in a couple of spots. And there's no way that bright red has lasted near forty years in the NSW elements.

I'm going to get my gramps to check it out as he lives quite nearby and is an old school mech.

Any other places that should be checked for problems? Thanks heaps guys.
