injected kombi motor into beetle?
as the title says, how hard is it to fit an injected aircooled type 3 looking motor from a kombi van into a beetle??
its Ryan here BTW, at work we have a wrecked kombi van, I havent had a chance to look at the ID, but I opened the engine cover and its an injected
motor with the type 3 style cooling fan on it.
can I fit the upright fan etc. to it and fit it to the beetle??
also what capacity is it likely to be, I think its all stock, and would it be worthwhile or possible to use the brakes etc. of the van as well?? only
problem being the van is probabl;y IRS where the beetle is a swing axle. if possible we would use carbs or an aftermarket ECU rather than the stock
EFI setup.
thanks for any help

you can fit it this is what i have in chaos. yes it has to be converted to upright but no the fi wont fit in the engine bay with out cutting . the
twin carbs work really well if you can source a set. you will need an 1800 fly wheel to marry it to the box. ill give some more info this arvo after i
finish work

thanks, we'll have to see if we can get it for a decent price
and then see if we can get an induction system to make it work, is this whats referred to as a type 4 motor??

yes it is the stock carbs work quite well on a stock t4 you can even get better fuel economy than a 1600 out of them

whats involved in getting the stock carbs onto the t4 motor, or do they also come out with single carbs on them??
and since we are now in alice springs, I'm not too sure having operational heater boxes is too much of an issue
oh, and also what tin work do we use to convert the t4 to upright?
and it will bolt up to the current gearbox no worries.
sorry for the list of questions that just never ends, but I just ask what pops into my head. and hopefully the authorities up here wont mind the
upgrade to what is it 1.8 or 2 .litres, may need to use the kombi brakes too

you can buy an upright kit for them ryan. about 700 bucks from sharpbuilt. or U2U mudbashinganyone and ask him about how he made his upright
kit.
it will be a 2 litre engine.
u are better off getting some 2 litre twin carbies and running those. a big single carb will never run as well.
or doing a bit of cutting and welding and keeping the FI
u will also need a new exhaust as its all different on the type 4
it will mate to your swinger box if its a 12 volt box......or a 6 volt box thats been clearanced for a 12v flywheel. but only if u get an 1800
flywheel for it as the 2 litre flywheel is for the larger bellhousing.

you have to modify the linkage as it doesnt quite fit in the engine bay of a bug but the carbs will bolt straight on to the motor. but as Anthiron
said you can buy the upright conversion from mike at sharpbuilt but if you do make sure you get the bush for the flywheel as well, because you will
need it so you dont stuff the gearbox.the only other person who makes the conversions is wayne penrose or richard at v force. you will need a
engineers for a 2L but the 1.8 you dont as it falls with in the 15% rule.
