Hey Robo... Im not sure how many shows have aired this season...
But I do know its only just started...

And Bizarre....Id imagine the strength would be fine...
Bus' have a full length box frame chassis...
Thats how the kombi concept got its name.... As in any kombination (ie: very adaptable).
And its a tough as a truck under there!

Cheers Hertz... I was pretty stoked when they put it up... I can wait to get it finished and get some serious shots done... Maybe even a moofie ot 2! BTW, hows the finish holding up on the Hertzwagon?

The finish is starting to look real shitty. You would know what its like when everyone keeps asking you when u r going to paint it, but you cant make them understand that its already painted, and that its meant to look that way. People just dont get it!

There has been a few convertible bus' built over the years...
I remember the Kawells ( http://www.kawellracing.com/ ) use to drag one back in the 70's! That was pretty strong and only ran a drivers roll cage!
And the there is another dude in the US who has a slammed cabrio barndoor!

So I guess your gonna build one them B?!
Here's a tip.... Make it early and slam it to hell!

It seems that they might not be that strong after all??.
How come VW fitted belly pans to strengthen the chassis on all sunroof models and double doors ??

Belly pans are just made of tin!... How the hell is that gonna strengthen anything?

Infact, the pans where added to make the bus more quiet.
They reduce the wind noise (turbulance) and road noise that comes through the floor. As an added bonus, you also gained economy through better aerodynamics! The ribbing found in them is to stop the drumming effect of flexing steel when it is placed in a location such as is used on a microbus.

The concept of belly pans is not new.... The aerodynamic benefit (low power + high gearing + high aerodynamic effeciency = high level economy and high speed autobahn travel) was one of the main reasons VW used a flat pan beneath all their sedans! That and the fact that it made it EZR to close the 'eggshell' construction concept of the cars! The aerodynamic effeciency obviously also carries over well to the concept of a luxury people mover such as the deluxe microbus.

If as you say it added strength the deluxe bus models because of some weakness as a result of the sunroof, then why is there little in the way of 'roof to gutter' or 'roof to pillar' strength added to any of the models in the bus range.... Have you had a look at how the roof is held on in a bus?... There is bugger all actually connecting it all together!.... No, all the strength found in a VW bus has been built into the chassis members, after all, this is why a vehicle that weighs less that 900kgs (panelvan) can legally carry over a ton!

If it was such a benefit , how come they werent fitted to all type 2's.To make them all quiet??
Infact panels vans were not fitted with them only the double door ones, so they thought the double doors might be more noisey, I dont think so.
13 and 15 window deluxes were not fitted with then but sunroof models were??
Only the ones that had a "not so stiff body" ????

They were made from steel not tin and as they were attached to all the main chassis rails and sills they added strength to the chassis, that is why double doors were fitted with them as they lost strength due to the doors on the other side, also the 23's and 21's were fitted with them as they had sunroofs and also lost stength
