Lowering a bus

Whats involved in lowering a baywindow bus? If i were to buy front adjusters would i be able to do the rest in my garage? I would probably get a pro welder to weld on the adjusters but wat about the rest?

cheers

Might be a good idea in your lowering journey to talk to either Kim at Indian Automotive or Mike at Custom Bugs and Buses. Both of these guys can give you the 'low-down', and better still, can do it for you in a day or two turn-around.

Yea am currently emailing cheif... But Im just wondering if i would be able to say do a trade in for beams in my garage. I got plenty of tools, space and fair bit of common knowledge. Is removing and installing a front beam difficult? Need any special tools etc?

thanx guyz

Pulling the front end from a kombi isnt that hard. Pull it out your self and get adjusters welded in, then refit it and lower the rear by turning splines on the torsion bars. Doing all the labour your self will save you big $$$.

thats what i was thinking. So now that i know i can do the labour myself, should i trade in my beam and get one with adjusters welded on for $440 from indian or should i buy the adjusters, take out my beam and get them welded on? The swap for beam with adjusters sounds a bit easier and is only $165 more than buying the adjusters and welding them on. What do you recon?

Kimms adjuster come with DIY instructions ... he doe's em on an exchange basis. I've got Indian beams, for the added grief, just get them all ready to roll. His kit comes with everything you need ... not sure about others ... but imagine that CBB, Custom Off Road and Volksfolks are similar story.

You are probably going to want rear adjustable spring plates too. Depends how low you're going, but then you might want the adjustable bump stops too....

You should then be able to fit in you're garage, but you'll need a wheel alignment after.

Talk to everyone, see which one you feel most confident going with ... and make sure you get everything you need, so you don't get left beamless...

Am looking to go down about 3 inches first with just front adjusters and just drop the back by adjusting spring plates. It seems like front adjusters are the building blocks for going low so when funds increase (sux being a student!!) I might go a bit lower and start to look for rear adjusters, bump stops or torsion bar stiffeners.

How much are torsion bar stiffeners worth?

Cheers

if you go for dropped spindles it might cost alittle more but the ride will be like stock and will lower the ride 2.5inches , wont be as much hassal to fit ,its a better way to go , if its not low enough weld the adjusters in later then you go on the down real low if you want and still have some padding left on your arse after driving to the split together
the only issue i see with spindles is they will widen the track by around 10/12mm , nothing major. think volksfolks sells them aswell as custom bugs you can also get them through a couple of us places like wagenwest and i believe cip1 could be wrong about cip but i would shop around for sure.

I think i will just go with an adjustable beam for now as that seams to be the building blocks so to speak for lowering a bus. Got a rough price on adjusters LObus? $200? $300? have been emailing indian also...

cheers
