Stock standard air cleaners
ok, my 1200 has i reckon everything factory original, and when i mean completely. the exhaust is so old is will have to be grinded off its rusted
on.
I did however inspect the bugs engine upon removing the engie lid, and being a vw amateur was shocked to find oil in the air cleaner. 
now upon finding the go with it and all, I personally just dont like it for personal reasons, despite talking with fellow veedub owners who agree its
better than a 'new' style air filter, i just like peace of mind, plus easability to check the cleaner and do things myself.
so, which is truly better, more beneficial, and so on
oil filter style
or filiment filter style.?

the oil style is better. Less maintainnance and better cleaning.. unless you plan to spend a few of those red money notes on a K&N filter or something
similar in performance. Those ryco paper ones don't filter that great. I used to use one, and you can still see dust and $h!t in the carby at service
time.. The VW engineers knew what they were doing, stick with stock unless you wanna spend the bucks, or plan on driving around at high rpm (coz i'm
pretty sure the oil-bath filter does restrict the intake a bit)

My rice burner has a K&N, purely for the no replacement factor and cleanability factor.
the oil one does restrict air flow abit, but yeah does clean better.
just seem like higher maintenance.
just wondering if k&n stock a filter for an original 1200 carby.

I have an original 1300 and my mechanics actually changed me back. Someone mucked up the other one I has in it(long story, and we still hav eno idea)
but in any case I needed a new one...
Said money no object want the best sice its my daily...they stuck in a stock saying original was better.
They said for performance original is best, for looks go for paper filter ones...
So original it is, according to the vw mechanics i used.

house???

oil bath is great for filtering.....and yeah all u have to do is put fresh oil in after a good clean out every oil change.
ive only changed mine cause they arent so good on weird angles offroad and dont really suit a baja.

have seen lots difrent air cleaners on vws stock air cleaner works the best .have seen stock kombi oil barth cleaners go years with out service and
washed up to 30 mm of mud out of the of the bottem of them with out performance loss. have run my c/buggy on sand a lot and find oil barth good .
have soon more probs with chep air cleaners or poorly fitted ones

If you havea Stock car then usea Stock aircleaner, unless your driving in the out back every day on dirt roads you wont have to touch the oil in the
air cleaner form 10000 Klms.

I went and priced a K&N pod filter at cheap skate auto yesterday to suit a standard carb and they're around the $80 mark but they dont have a
provision for the breather hose

TY for the info guys, yeah, in a quest to make this thing 100% original
(except the sports seats to drive in everyday)
i want to keep things as they were, except the 6v issue, it will remain 12v.
