Finding VWs in South Africa
I am going to South Africa next month (Capetown, Stellenbosch and Sun City) and was wondering if there are any shops or wreckers I should go to for VW
stuff.
Lots of people from there say that dubs are everywhere there but nobody seems to be able to say where to visit.
Any ideas people?

Dunno - but there's some odd ones there - like wide-five wheels and link pins into the 70s and elephant foot lights on 'adapter brackets'...

I know they made unusual models over there. Split Kombis were made much later than here for instance. I would love to find a 23 window over there
and bring back but I don't fancy my chances.

from what i heard they have lots of cool stuff as standard (or at least very very common) like beetle popouts, safaries and splitty deluxe clocks.
any chance of fitting a set of early size beetle popouts into your bag or mailing them?

If there is anything left as the people from the UK have been getting stuff there for years and they may have runout as the're coming here
now!......I really have no idea but as was said they had different things like wide 5 rims with slots just like the porsche 356 up till 72 and many
other oddities.
Worth a look as they may not think much of their vw parts but are gold to you.

I work with a guy who grew up in Cape Town so I've just asked him. Apparently they have some huge junkyards full of old cars, a good number of which
are VW. He says there are quite a lot of busses (but his information is several years old now).

A lot of cool stuff on that link Bizzare but I can't erad a word of it. Looks German.
Lots of people from SA say there are VWs everywhere but it is always several years since they were there and no-one can say something like you gotta
see Joe at xyz business as he has lots or whatever.
Whatnow, I wouldn't be able to fit them in my bag I wouldn't think and I won't have the PC with me to log on to this site while I am there so
probably a bit hard. If I find them somewhere though, I will let you know.

the double door cab whch is from the uk and as been restred bt with some surface rust left on came out of a scapyard in SA. I went to SA recently and
didn't see a great deal. Joburg is not exactaly the place to be wandering the back streets looking for old dubs. unless you are braver than me,
scared the hell out of me in places.
amazing country, probably more dubs in OZ i recon. Definately a highlight for me SA. great place. loved it
good luck with the hunt.

think it was first episode of the first series of amazing race - 2 drop kicks got slowed down becuase these guys had their donkey hooked up to a 23
window and making slow progress ... think it was Puru or somewhere like that.
A friend of the family (into buses) went there in the late 80s with bag of money (I think Richard Kings money) ... but came back with sod all, except
NOS parts. I would think that anything split has been picked clean by now.

I figured that it was probably only rose coloured glasses that ex SA use when talking about all the VWs there as nobody can say any actual place to
look for anything. Soon see for myself though.
Thanks guys

Most of the decent stuff went years ago as the Poms used to just go for the week.
Its a hell of a lot closer and cheaper for them to get the stuff back home.
When stuff ran out they then went looking further afield and started to come here.
You dont hear of them over here as much as most of the good stuff they could find or were told of has now gone.
Good luck with your trip.
Be careful
