Type 1 engine/GB campatability?

OK,
I've been trying to sort out my junk to get the beetle back on the road.
I have a '74 beetle (compliance 12/73) with an AD motor (1600TP) and a 113-301-103 GB all original.
My spare parts car came with the same, AD motor (in pieces unfortunately, so bit's missing) and 113 GB. When I tried to mate the GB to the motor it didn't fit!!!
After some frustration it looks like the bottom studs on the motor have been bent which causes the flywheel to hit the top of the bell houseing :-(.

I now also have a brazilian motor BZ*** (anyone have any details on these?). When I try the GB on this, again trouble!! What it appears to be is there is a steel ring on the 'fingers' of the clutch that the thrust washer pushes against. The inner diameter of this is smaller than the diameter of the sleeve the thrust bearing slides on stopping the motor and GB going together.
Is it simply a matter of getting a new clutch, or is there mor to look out for?
Also as the clutch is reasonably new, can the ring be removed?? (It didn't look like it with a quick look).
Also the motor came out of a '59 beetle if that makes any difference?
Thanks for the help,
Andy

ok, you got a few probs here.

First, if your engine studs are bent, just double lock nut them and remove them. Then put straight ones in with some high strength locktight.

As for your clutch, it sounds like you have an IRS gearbox with the throw-out bearing guide tube on it. The clutch you are trying to mount to it is a swingaxle pressure plate designed to mount to a swingaxle gearbox which has a different throw-out bearing which doesn't use a guide tube.

Basically you need a pressure plate without a collar on the fingers when you use an IRS box. And yes you can just remove the collar. Just check the thrust face of the throw-out will touch the fingers in the correct position. I have removed the collar on a finger diaphragm type PP, and also on the three finger spring type PP, and had no probs both times.

There is one more thing you may want to check. if your engine came from a 59, it may have a 6 volt flywheel which won't work with your 12V starter. You can count the teeth on the flywheel to check this. Also if it is old the clutch will be 180mm diameter. This is a bit small. Later 12V cars use a 200mm flywheel.

Thanks Wes,
The studs aren't a problem, just a pian it took so long to figure out why it didn't fit (I get impatient quickly), oh, the lock nut trick don't work on these rusty buggers. I'll fix 'em though:D
Yes, it's an IRS GB and assume the bug it came out of was swing axle, so what you say adds up. I'll check the flywheel tonight to see what I have.
If it is the smaller flywheel, would it suit a '55? If so I can give it to my brother and get a new flywheel and clutch.
Thanks again.
Andy
