Removable rear clip
Anyone got any photos/descriptions of the best way to create a removable rear clip/valance for a beetle?

Hi,
Dasdubber in "members rides" showed a fair bit of his conversion(in steel) and I've seen 68Autobug's yahoo page on his (fibreglass).
I'm looking at doing the same in a couple of months, just working out options as well.

i started with a new panel and just bolted it from the sides instead of spot welding it

Cheers heaps, thats just the ticket.
Just bought the latest VWMA today, so I guess the next ones a little ways off, and the car should be going to the panel beater next week.
Wanted to give the guy a bit of help, as though he's done vw restos before, he hasn't done a removable clip.
Fantastic job Dasdubber, I thought I had seen it in those many pages, but knew it would take a while for me to find.
Much appreciated and keep up the good work.

Hi
Just about every one I have seen the left a lot to be desired. They left the back end of the car very flimsy, grab hold of the bumper on these cars
and watch the beaver and mudguards flex or watch them gas it up of the line and see it shimmy, it also makes the use of rear tramp bar useless as the
more you tighten it up the more the body will bend.
If you don’t really need it, don’t do it.
I’m putting one on my 1303 and I hope I can make better job of it, it’s a necessity on a WRX conversion.

Steve's right.
I had the flexing problem with my on my old Oval,
I welded the clip back on and the rear was solid again.
It's not that hard to jack the car up to drop the engine out the bottom.

Hmmm....I don't get flex at all with mine. I think without any support brackets (which the guard bolts attach to), there would be too much movement.
In the original VW Trends article which I followed, there was a steel tube welded between the two support brackets to further stiffen the rear,
however I didn't need to do this as mine turned out quite stable.
