Need help. horn troubles. Its alive, goes on when turning.

Hi avd'ers, i know someone else ages ago complained of this trouble, i think :S, but anywho, used the search option, and oh boy that thing couldn't find crap all.

anyways, heres my troubles. Ignition is on , but when turning the steering wheel at certain positions, the horn honks. I have made sure the loose wires at the top aren't touching the metal. (Cause there is no horn button attatched, cause it came with no horn ring) Yet it still honks. With both stock and boss kit sports wheels, it plays the same game.

this is a 69 IRS BJ semi auto bug, if that helps. But its obviously an issue that must be addressed, so needs ur advice and help, seeing ur the pros :D Lol.

Cheers all.

the horn contact wire runs through the centre of the steering column. It activates the horn when earthed to the column.Yuor wire must be touching somewhere inside the column.

Not sure how your system is earthed, but on mine the problem occurs at 1 of 2 places.

Either down at the rubber steering coupler,

or at the "carbon plug" just below the steering wheel.

I had similar troubles a while ago and had to pull off the road and disconnect the wires to the horns. The problem was the "carbon plug".

Hmm, i hope its in the carbon plug, Lol. Cause getting to thesteering coupler easily would require taking out the fuel tank, and its full of fuel. Lol. Crap. Haha. Could get a clean drum or something, bleed it out, but will tinker with the wires up top 1st.

So like, does the insulated coating on the wires wear off easily to play these kinda games does it?

by the way, thanx all the for help and advice :D
i appreciate it.

Hahaha, sorry, I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of your poor Bug honking when you turn the wheel. :P

Hope you find the problem, and I hope my semi-auto Bug never does that!

my bug had this problem, i d/c the horn for a few months but got the shits when i couldnt honk at rude drivers
i have a formuling france wheel and when i took it off i removed the round horn contact on the bottom of the boss and found the wire had rubbed through where it went up into the wheel. this probably isnt your prob if both your wheels do it but just trace the earth from the column down to the horn it will be rubbing somewhere

Hey Chris,

TRhe only extra things I can give you are this.

1. the wire from your horn connects the the bottom (just above your brake master) of the steering tube. This wire might hit the steering column due to worn bushes/bearings

2. if you have an aftermarket wheel the horn ring might not sit properly on the boss therefore hitting a part of the column along the lines.

3. disconnect the horn ring (chrome piece on standard steerer, and see if the issue still arise4s, if not then it is somewhere in the horn ring steerer section.

4. be very patent with it as these sort of electrical issues can take ages to find. if you wish to do it without the horn going all the time place a light bulb in the place of the horn, this way the light will glow each time the connect is made instead of the neighbours egging your car the following night due to the noise.

on another one of my cars the indicator canceller rubed on the horn ring in two places thus it maybe just a requirement to look at this as well (do nto think this is possible as the beetle indicator works slightly differently.

Good luck

Cheers
T

thanks for the tip. was playing with it this arvo, the horn going rank, was witing for the neighbours next door (with the baby) to kick my ass, but nothing happened, .... yet.

Haha, had a 1st delimma of many, locked my keys in tonight, Lol.

ANyways, update, ok, the horn works as to normal without honking when i steer with the box below the steering wheel (one containing the ignition and blinkers) is unbolted and just floating. Once i put that metal bolt back in, it goes honking. Its up the top there where its getting earthed. I can also here the noise if the spark, (lil' crackle or it or wateva) coming from inside that box.

What do i do now? I unbolted the thing, don't wanna root anything up, I can't slide the box off too easily as there is a metal 3/4 washer (as in it wraps around 3/4 of the way around the steering column), that is pressed and and won't come off cause its stuck in a nice firm groove. I don't wanna bust it. Do i even need to take that box off. Lol. Will shine a torch in the pipe, see if i can see the wiring fault. Hope its not too far down.

Be great if the button wasn't hard connected to the wheel but rather to the outer column or wateva, holding still like the blinkers, then the wire for the horn would just run from that box up into the bonnet instead, be so much easier to manage. Lol, the lesson learned from the past.

That little box may be a relay. the click you can hear inside the box is the relay making the power go to the horn after the wire for the column has been earthed.

If your bug does not have a horn relay, then forget everything I said and I am unsure what the little box you mention is about?

Nah, i don't think its a relay :S

What i was refering to was kinda the housing (which i called a 'box'), that holds the ignition key turning thing that u put the key in, and has a lil' groove for the blinker bar taht comes out and fit once u slide that in. It holds all the wires that come from the ignition and blinkers and runs em up into the bonnet. (I made sure the horn wires didn't run up that way too, would have been more easier if it was, Lol)
