A mexican seal that clips to the bonnet will be used so the seal retaining lip was removed all around. The upper edge of the bonnet will probably see
some adhesive backed closed cell foam or rubber (will address that after paint).

Damo has been down the last couple of days (and tomorrow) trying to keep things moving safe a few bucks in labour as well. Unfortunately more cancer
needed to be fixed today which kept me occupied for the majority of the time. Only one guard out of four didn't need repairs, and one may be beyond
saving (will re-evaluate tomorrow to see if it is cost effective to repair).
I didn't take a pic of every repair as they all look much the same same but different.

Was hoping to have the whole lot in primer by today but the rust put a spanner in the works. Damo spent time today cleaning and buzzing the existing
paint back with 220 on the dual action sander (240 normally used but didn't have any in stock).
Today also saw repairing a crack in the passenger door near quarter window as well as a couple rust holes, plus a bit of work on the drivers door.
More filler work and lots of sanding is getting the body into shape before primer (tomorrow hopefully). Once the high build primer is down a guide
coat will be applied so some more sanding can be done and any final imperfections filled before colour goes on (single stage 2K).
I buzzed the body back late this arvo so only a bit more prep for Damo to do tomorrow before priming starts.

Speaking of which, I decided to repair the rear guard rather than finding another second hand one with unknown problems (see Rod's chop top thread
for examples!)...around 7 or so repair patches were required on the guard mating surface but it is all solid now.
Obviously a lot of moisture was sitting under the tail light for quite a while...believe it or not all of this was covered in bog with only a couple
of bubbles showing through the paint before we decided to dig deeper and uncover another "repair"
I had to hand form a repair piece with the right contour (don't have an English wheel unfortuantely). It was tacked in place and slowly welded right
around making sure not too much heat warped the guard.
Lovin the hoist!
Here is the big man himself in action prepping the underside.
Damo had to make a quick dash to the loo after seeing how nice the underside of the guards turned out in anti stone chip (applied via Shultz gun). He
was pretty excited!
The inner guards also received the same treatment along with under parcel tray and under tank etc.
Hopefully in primer tomorrow now that welding is FINALLY over!

Not trying to be a know it all or bag good work but ive always found it easier to prime the car first, rub it ready for paint , stone chip it before
paint, let it flash off then hit the whole lot in 1 go, looking good though

flash off is letting the top layer of paint dry off before you paint over it, its what should be done between coats, you have to be careful with
stoneguard because if its sprayed on too thick and painted over too soon you will get small air bubbles as the paint dries and can wreck the look of a
good job, best to spray on a light coat, once again just a little unharmful advice

I'm always up for learning new things from others suggestions - especially from someone like yourself who has been around the industry for a lot
longer than me! In this case Damo has decided to keep under the guards (and inner arches) black so it was applied and back masked to avoid painting
over it. I may shoot a coat of satin black over the top for extra protection. On my old ragtop I adopted the method you described and applied stone
chip after primer just before paint went on.
Long day today - Damo is keeping his headliner in place (hope your going to give it a coat of fresh white vinyl paint Damo as it looks pretty funky!)
As such it has to be masked up which always takes a long long time
(plus back seat/rear trims still in situ).
Wiring didn't come out so it all had to be masked up. Providing Damo runs a wiring cover as per original, only the new fresh paint should be seen.
I've decided to switch from Spies Hecker to PPG for a trial run. After sanding the entire surface with 240 grit on D/A sander (and by hand where
necessary) and scuffing in hard to reach areas with scotchbrite to remove any gloss, 2 coats of DP40 epoxy primer was applied (1:1 with hardener.
1.4tip 4bar)....after discussing options with the rep this was deemed the best primer to go over existing paint providing it wasn't baked (not
possible since my booth is not ready yet!) (5min flash time btw coats)
After 15 minute flash time the HS Primer (High Solids (basically high build) - 2.0tip 3.8bar) was applied (2 coats also) - this stuff sprays THICK but
reportedly sands nicely. Next step (after curing time) is guide coat and more sanding....fix imperfections then touch up HS primer before final sand
(after more guide coat) and THEN colour (in this case PPG 2K single stage as the colour couldn't be mixed in base coat).
Almost there.

Leaving the rear set in was much of a muchness as it made no difference it came out or not....the fact the headliner wasn't coming out ($) resulted
in having to mask down the b-pillars anyway and around the rear window, and under the rear side windows etc etc....so itw as easier to mask it right
across the b-pillars in this instance. I guess we've gone further than Damo originally anticipated (and as a result more $ spent) so the line had to
be drawn somewhere.....that line was the headliner

Al, thats looking wicked the advice from Rexy is good too but not too worry i'm sure it will be fine, masking looks like it was a mission but nothing
like the chop top. It's good to see it one even colour, looking forward to seeing the colour on it, thanks again for the great work your doing.

Because the headlining and seats are in excellent condition, plus i wasn't expecting the work to go that far.

^ I really like the look of a car up on jack stands with lots of bits removed. I guess it reminds of WRC cars in service or something. I only realised
lately it's not a healthy thing. Up on jackstands in 1 million pieces really means it's useless and it's going to cost money...funny thing is, the
missus knew this years ago.

Damo, got the dash and inside doors/sills etc painted in colour today (forgot the bloody camera though!)....that birch green is pretty bright off the
gun....hope you like it as it was off the codes you gave me
Tomorrow I will do the final repairs after sanding the exterior (after guide coat) on any minor dents (remembering the deal was to leave the body work
pretty much as is apart from rust repair).....then hopefully colour if all goes to plan not long after. Will be in touch re. pickup day/time after I
know a bit more accurately completion schedule.
