there are 2 main ways of doing them. the first is adding a 5th to the stock box ie the berg 5 speed and the true shift 5 speed. the second is replacing the stock box with a 5 speed out of something else ie porsche 901 box. both have there advantages and disadvantages.

btw cut back on the drinking or sniffing of petrol if your staggering so much ;)

5 speed conversions give you, wait, 5 GEARS? Holy crap!
So are they worth it? When I'm in my Super at about 135kph, she just feels like she needs that extra gear to cut down the revs (Or go faster).

most people use them to give a closer gear set but you could use them to get more speed and lower revs

I don't really need to go much faster than 135kph anyway, after all it's only a 1600TP. If I wanted speed I should probably go for dual carbs (Or a bigger single), but a little more accelleration through the gears would be nice.

1300/1500 box will give you that.
i had a 1300 with a super bug top gear built for a beetle once. launched of the line, bit of a jump between thrid and fourth but i had fast acceleration and cruise fourth.

A fifth gear is always pretty cool. An overdrive to help keep the revs down on the highway. More torque will help overcome lugging if you plan to go for a higher diff ratio instead.

The T1 box is over-driven in std configuration.

Just doing a 5-speed conversion without careful consideration of engine outputs, tyre size, gear ratios, etc can cause major dramas with heat. For a stock-ish engine to push a beetle along at 110km/h, alot of heat will be generated. If your engine speed has been reduced significantly due to really tall gearing, how are you going to cool the engine?

well said astro.

they are not for taller gears, just closer ratios 1 thru fourth

under the load of pushing your beetle along in top gear- at speed, the fan will need plenting of rpm to cool sufficiently.

Taller tyres will reduce revs... if it's that much of a problem

and yes engine speed and heat etc are related

Hmm... No thanks, I don't like Mazdas. I wouln't even spend that much on a modern car, it's a waste of money (No offence, it's just my opinion).
