my faithful dacshund has passed

have had this dog since i was 3 years old.

he woud have been 17 this year.

he has lived though falling down flights of stairs and nearly breaking his back more than once. was still engergetic at 17 and has always been a great dog. he had a heart problem last night and lost controll of his legs. vet couldnt do anything for him. and he was going to suffer so he was put down.

doesnt feel right not having him around.

RIP buddy.

thanks for the kind words guys.

i keep remembering as a kid racing him around our house and cruising on my grandparents tri hull tinnie with him. he used to walk around the skirting with no railings up around the half cab to the anchor well and lie in the sun. hes in my most early memories of our place at imbil as a puppy playing in the rusted out mini in our back yard and my 3rd birthday party.

I'm not a dog person (love cats) but I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet, so my thoughts are with you.

I had a rare little lilac and white budgie named Opal for 5 years, he passed away June last year. Cute little bugger could say enough words and sentences to fill an A4 sheet of paper, he'd give me kisses on my nose, plus he was unscathed after an adventure in one of my cat's mouths... it doesn't matter how little a pet is, they leave a big hole in the heart once they go.

I also lost a Dacshund a few years back, he (Duke) died after experiencing the same problems as yours. He was 10, so I feel your sadness too. Sorry to hear about your mate.

I had an English Shepherd, bitza cross named Riley Greytoes for 13 years. He was all black except for a white tummy and chest, a white tip to his tail and all of his toes on all of his paws were grey, hence his name. He was extrememly intelligent, invincible in combat, he flogged bull terriers for fun, and a great mate. He died about 11 years ago and I still have his picture on the fridge.

I'm reminded of the lines in the song Mr Bojangles.

"He spoke in tears, how for 15 years, his dog and he travelled about.
The dog up and died, he up and died and after 20 years he still grieves."

I know how you feel. Unfortunately, it doesn't get any easier.
