do they still have the same arc of distance accross the windscreen? ie: are they travveling an extra distance to go off the windscreen or are they not covering as much windscreen and making up for it by going off the screen and then back to rest?

Windscreen wiper blades going off the screen, has nothing to do with the motor or the park positon!

Assuming you still have the standard installation with the original wiper linkage, it's likely to be wiper arms incorectly positioned on the wiper spindles or just possibly, excessively long wiper blades.
