Fuel Problems??

Hi, anyone got any ideas about fuel systems?

My 84 Caravelle has had the sturters. It would go ok and then seem like the fuel would stop for a second and then go ok again. Seemed to get a bit better as it warmed up. Occasionally it would just turn off altogher but would restart. A little stressful in traffic!

Anyway now it's turning over but not firing. It did fire just before but only for about 10 seconds then stoppped. I had a new fuel filter put in about 6 weeks ago. Could it be a stuffed fuel pump?

Cheers.

Thanks. Yeah the fuel line seems ok.

How do you check that your fuel pump is working? I have no idea.

Cheers.

i dont know anything about caravelles but do they have a fuel cut off solinoid? cause this sounds alot like symptoms of a faulty solinoid.

yeah my fuel pump is making a noise. got it going ok this morning but need to keep the revs up. the fuel pump keeps whirring though. Is it supposed to stop?

Could it be someting to do with changing the fuel filter about 6 weeks ago?

Normally, electric fuel pumps start up to build up pressure then settle down and You don't hear them..
It hasn't burned out as You can hear it....
but it could be worn too much to keep up the fuel...

best of luck

Man! replaced the fuel pump which cost some $'s it was making some strange noises so thought that had to be it. Nope. How do you check the fuel injectors to see if they work?

Mine must work the majority of the time becasue the car might be ok for 5 minutes but then it's like the fuel's not getting to te engine for a second, then ok for a second then problem again and sometime the engine just stops.

Seems to be better under high revs if that helps. My guess is some blockage in the injectors (which are solenoids?).

Took it to the only mechanic in Broome who'll touch VW's and it ran ok! Said bring it back when it's playing up. Problem is when it's playing up I'm halfway around a corner!
