Power steering to old school beetles
I have a few Subaru liberty power steering racks & thinking they would be a good fit for a vw , say a 1960 beetle .The pump would be at the rear of
the car with larger lines running to the front .
Thoughts guys ??

I recall a huge discussion on R&P conversions, bump steer etc etc here a couple of years ago...? Nice idea, but rather large geometry problems...?

Hmmmm. I second that question. My wife can turn the steering wheel on her beetle with one hand while driving at walking speed. Certainly not a heavy
steering.

Once lowered with wider wheels it becomes a bit of a problem. My dad looked into it a while back, and it is possible to use a camira rack and pinion
setup with some custom tie rod ends. The main reason for using the camira setup was that the steering column connects to it in the centre. Uni joints
would be needed to connected to the steering column as it wont line up. He put this setup into a few bay kombis with little bump steer at all.

I understand about the wider wheels. Her beetle has skinny tyres, and only lowered a little bit. I suppose it would also get heavier with a smaller
steering wheel.

Yeah the Camira rack is nice as the tie rods are nice and long and pivot close to the centre

There are quite a few power assisted racks available with cetrerd pickup points that the serious speedway boys use.
They are not particularly cheap but are bulletproof.
Do Camira racks come power assisted?

Semi interested in this as any 2nd hand rack has to be cheaper than a new Super beetle steering box....

yeah good question - I don't think PS was offered on Camira!
Try a late-model Daewoo instead.. which is not what gull has laying about!

Power steering was definitely offered on camira's, go to the nearest pick a part and have a look. The custom bugs and buses stretched kombi had a
camira power steering setup in it, as well as their gunmetal grey twincab.

how do u go about fitting a camira steering rack?
i was considering the vforce one but i thinki i might crash if i bump the steering wheel with a 1:1.1 ratio.
