Kombi Stereo
Hey all,
i have been reading over all the old tech articles about stereos. I have decided it is time to replace my original am radio. I was thinking a
reasonable sony head unit, with some 6inch 2 way speakers at the front, and one or two 10inch subwoofer/s in the back running off an amp.... I was
hoping someone could tell me if this would sound any good, would there be too much bass, or is this the completely wrong way to go???... What kind of
amp would be good??.... Also about putting the 6inch speakers in the front doors, i dont think my window scrapers are in very good condition, should i
avoid putting them in the door, or can i cover the back of the speakers in something??... Sorry if the questions seem silly im a bit hopeless as far
as car stereos go
Thanks for any help

will sound great.!
Possibly a little too bassy but you definately want some extra bass at rear.
-
Have you seen the speakers with the half cover made of plastic which is used as water shield in door.?
-
I think you need to allow air movement from the back of the speaker but some shield across top (within the door) is excellent idea.

I like the effect in my missuses Kombi from having the four speakers.
I would recommend two 8 inch in back as opposed to one 10 inch.

hey
in my kombi i have 12 x 2 inch ORION subs both pumpin out 200 RMS there run by a fusion amp i also have 6.5" splits and a pair of pioneer 6 x
9's all run off a Alpine head unit ...... and boy does it make some things rattle!!!
but thats what i wanted if u want some good quality sound but not heaps of bass go and buy some 6.5" splits (my alpine top of the range where
$245) to run in your doors and get some 6 x 9's to run up the back!!! and a good headunit that has a good wattage output for your 4 channels!!!
(mine is 40RMS x 4 which is huge)but my headunit cost me $500!!! but any kenwood or pioneer(i tend to steer away from sony stuff!) should get u some
where (say around $250) so all up for around $ 600 u have a nice soundin system and ur up for some bass then get a bl;aupunkt sub and an amp (bout 400
for both )
here is a cheap place where i bout my subs and shit from

I'd go with the 6" two-ways in the front doors, but replace the scrapers first. I've also bought some 6x9's for my kombi, which
will possibly end up in the panel below the rear seat. I'm not going to bother with subs at this stage, I'm not trying to entertain the
whole neighbourhood.
In addition to using decent quality hardware, major gains can be made by close attention to soundproofing and wiring. Make sure your power supply
wiring (and earth) is up to the task, and soundproof as much as you can afford to. A relatively cheap system can sound much more expensive this way,
and as a bonus, you'll still be able to hear the stereo while belting down the highway at 110. :thumb

I can certainly vouch for soundproofing the doors, gives a much nicer sound. Refer to my post some time ago:

I have a Pioneer CD connected to an ADS 4 channel high current amp with Boston Acoustics 6.5 inch splits in the front doors and 6x9 Boston Acoustics
in the panel under the bed seat. The system is very musical with plenty of low clean tight bass and i haven"t found it necessary to add a Sub. The
installation is very important, the guy who installed my system used to do all the exotic stuff in London that was then shipped out to wealthy people
in Saudi Arabia. If your speakers are very solidly mounted and better still, enclosed ,and high quality interconnecting cable and speaker cable is used
then you should get a good result with any of the reputable brands from Japan or the U.S

Boxed 6x9's certainly produce more bass than mounting them free air, but 6x9's are not a good mix with subs. Have one or the other, not
both.
How much bass is too much bass?
I have one 12" and most people would say its too much, but i want another!
Tens do not produce huge amounts of bass, unless paying for top end gear.
Two tens in a kombi would sound good, and if its too bassy just turn the gain down on the amp!
As for the front speakers, get hold of some plastic, similar to that used to cover the back of your door cards.
Its more like the construction plastic used when laying concrete, not like plastic bags which will rattle and sound crap.
Attach it to the rear of your doorcards with enough to cover the back of the speakers once they are installed in place.
This should keep em dry and functioning properly.
P.S. SONY ROCKS!
But thats my opinion.

For the purpose of subs, only one channel is necessary, because the wavelength of subsonic sound is so long that you would not be able to
differentiate between right and left within the confines of a car.
That said, some multi-channel amps can be bridged to produce the amp's total output through one channel. Also, there are several ways to wire up
subs to reduce impedence and hence increase the output. How you decide to wire it will dictate the amp you need, or vice-versa.
I'd suggest you go to a place that does installations and ask them. Make sure you're talking to someone that knows about installations, not
just the sales-guy.
Remember that what will suit a kombi is very different to what will suit a sedan.

Id go with one 12" over two tens.
Get an amp rated at slightly more than the power handeling of the sub/s you buy.
A two channel amp will do for one sub, 4 channel for 2 subs.
Bridge two channels per sub.

dash hole for a stereo...(1973)... is slightly to skinny... however i figure i could cut it a little bit wider... however i have no ideas on how to
secure the head unit in place... there is much around cept for a piece of metal coming down from the frount of the dash (i presume my radio was
supposed to be attached to it... can any tell me the best way to secure a head unit???
Thanks

You'll probably have to make up and fit a suppourt bracket for the rear of your head unit. You'll see a small screw hole in the middile of
your unit at the back that is meant for mounting. Just make sure you A) use the flat end screw provided, and B) dont turn it further than it says or
you'll damage you head unit!
Or mount it elswhere with a custom bracket.
Your head unit should have a metal surroond to clip it into as well.

there is an old 'splitty' ute thats done up like a mobile fruit and vege juice machine that drives around Byron Bay selling juices off the
back and anyway it has got a speaker unit made from plummers pipe- the pvc tubing. It has one speaker at either end mounted in a 90 degree elbow so
they face forwards and then twice in the long section they have added 'T' sections with speakers in them. The whole unit sits up behind your
head facing the windscreen/ the back of the occupants heads. I believe its stuffed with some speaker foam to give it the correct sound....looks very
effective.....sounds alright (probably because it so close to the occupants ears).. and its cheap.
Its a beautiful bluey/aqua splitty ute, if you ever get the chance to go to Byron it normally does a run around around the caravan parks/ beaches if
you you are ever there check it out.
Female driver is an absolute honey and well worth the look.
I have built a speaker box/ consule box for my van. I have speakers in both of the front doors and then because my van has two seperate front seats I
built a box that sits between them and have put a drinkholder/tray on the top to sit things in when I am 'out-and-about'
Its made from 18mm mdf and I left one inch gaps the width of it just under the lid to let the sound/bass/pressure escape. Its lined with speaker foam
and the speaker are some sony XS-HF600G. They are wired to a 'reverse' polarity, so when one is sucking in the other is pumping out. One
faces the front of the car and the other faces the back-- it works really well and was very affordable to do.
My only problem is that I believe to get the best sound from 'any' speaker you need it at atleast your chest height or higher. These
speakers of mine have a great sound its just my legs get the best quality sounds first!!
Anyway this thing is totally portable and has enough length on the wires so it can sit outside the van and be used as a speaker/table/seat. If I had a
digi camera I would post some pics...sorry
If you want something really good in your van I believe you have to lessen the sound of the actual van (motor and road sounds).
But thats just my 2 cents

ive actually done the reverse of what some of you have done and found the sound excellent. a have a pair of pioneer splits in the rea, around 5-6inch
main, a pair of 2 way 6x9 explods up front, and a sony hipower head unit up front, no sub and once i do some sound proofing it will sound excellent.
the bass from the rear splits (about 10-20 yrs old!) is unreal, and i can hear it all loud and clear over my engine when i have it running even with a
HUGE hole in the muffler.
