dumb Qu, "what is a split" (speaker that is, not kombi)
often seen the expression 'front splits' but I have no idea what it means.

I think i got a pic here. was told what it was bout a month or 2 ago.

A split speaker is actually a matched pair of speakers designed to handle a wide frequency range by separating (splitting) the signal into two
frequency bands and sending the higher band to the tweeter of the matched pair and the lower band to the mid-range. The spltting of the signal is
performed by a black box called a 'crossover'.
Split speakers are often 6 or 6.5 inches for cars, with a 1" tweeter. A matched pair is located appropriately on each side, typically with the
mid-range lower down and the tweeter mounted higher and pointing toward the listeners head, as sound becomes more directional, the higher the
frequency.
It may help to understand split speakers by contrast with the more common co-axial design, where the tweeter element (if any...) is mounted and
aligned integrally with the main body, so the higher frequencies often end up entertaining our feet.
There is no relationships between split speakers and plastic enclosures, though some cheaper examples manage to negate the advantages of sdpltting by
"enclosing the two in the same plastic box", which once again ends up entertaining our ankles.

Also called component speakers. They are generally more expensive than 2 way or 3 way speakers, but give superior sound when installed correctly.

ta, I understand now.
I've got some 2 way 4inch speakers in the front of my buggy, got em from jaycar, here's the twist, they tweeter is directional, so it's almost as
good as splits, eh?

Those jaycar 4 inch 2 ways are fantastic gear - real meaty magnet for such a small driver and great tweeters too. You should put them in a suitably
sized enclosure (I used to have these speakers, but dont anymore and cant remember how big the box was) - they give nice punchy midbass for a small,
cheap speaker.

unfortunately there's not a lot of room for enclosures behind the dash. I might have to dream something up.
however, I have a set of the same series of 6x9s in the back seat in small sealed enclosures, and they are tops. There's nothing like drivin a buggy
with Jimi Hendrix cutting sik on his upside down Fender strat!

I was trying to dream up an answer to the same question, had a spare amp, and was going to add those exact 4" splits to the front.........Try a
wreckers and get some enclosure/panel bits off a newish wrecked car... mount them on the side panels under the dash..........otherwise you pay around
$150 for em from JBhifi....the way I measured it up meant cutting into the panels though, even with a spacer, and a moulded panel enclosure from
friends Hilux wreck....please post pics
