The difference is the single side plate has only one removable side plate

A double side plate has................................two side plates!!!

SSP are IRS boxes only, I think they were in L bugs (& maybe supers??) but dunno for sure as its not the box I need for my ride so I havent researched it all that much. Only one side of the box will have a removable plate, the other side its cast as part of the housing so I guess its stronger. Double side plate are much more common, they come in IRS & Swingaxle and you will see a round removable plate on each side where the axles or drive flanges come out. Internally there are different gear ratios, theres a few reference sites on the net which tell you what the codes mean on the box as to the gear ratios inside. I know I've found some but I'm stuffed if I can find em right now, I know someone will come up with a link.

Close-ish

The single side plates were 1974 on and IRS. Late L bugs and 1976 standards

The double side plates were on all IRS pans before this. Early L's and 1302's (S's)

If you look where the CV joins the flange on the box there is a big plate.... say 300mm in diameter that the flange comes out of.

From there it either has 2 removable plates or one. In the single side plates it is just cast in position.
