Electrical wiring questions

Hi all,

I have two questions concerning the wiring of my 1964 beetle.

I have nearly sorted out all the wiring however there are a few things that I have forgotten (the tech books I have don't outline these in depth).

1. The fuel guage that I have has four connections in a cross fashion. The top one is the dash guage light, the left one is power to the guage and the right is the power/signal line to the guage/float mechanism. Is anyone able to tell me what the bottom one is for? I think it is to ground the guage but I am not certain.

2. I am having trouble wiring up the horn. I have the feeder wire that comes down the steering tube, which then connected to the big round rubber damper, but i am not sure where it goes from there (i know that it goes to the horn but i am unsure what path it takes as it will coil around the steering tube itself when you turn the wheel.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt.

The 4th wire on the fuel gauge definitely sounds like a ground wire.

I couldn't find My circuit diagram for Australian built Beetles.... I've cut the page out to email it and didn't put it back.....
All My other books have circuit diagrams for German beetles made for the USA which have very different wiring circuits.... and only two wires going to the fuel gauge... plus the lamp...

The earth wire does go to the horn, via that connector on the rubber coupler... I wound My wire around the steering shaft a few times and made sure I could turn the steering wheel all way round in both directions...
It has come off in two occasions...
next time I'll solder it on... lol..
Its a stupid way to wire something I think....
I have no problems with My air horns which are activated by a push button switch under the dash.... via a relay..

Lee
