Wanted: Cylinder Heads (1974 bay)

Hi all,

I have been told that my bus needs new heads and at $1100 for a new pair I am exploring all options! Can anyone help with recon. ones or a pair in good nick? Even some advice on what these are worth second hand would be great. The engine is a dual carb type and I am in Melbourne.

You should contact some of the local (Melb) sponsors of this forum, in particular Dean at Volkspower.

I went through a similar exercise recently and found Volkspower a great company to deal with.

See:

As for reconditioned heads, the head I replaced in my Bay was "reconditioned" and failed in less than 12 months. So be very careful with reconditioned or 2nd hand stuff.

This is a big job as the engine has to come out so be prepared for a major investment unless you have the skills to do it yourself.

You should also ensure that you get the clutch and main bearing seal checked while the engine is out. Good time to check out the alternator too!

imho

my brother got a new set of amc heads installed in his 1.8l bay by a vw shop cost him $1950 all up.

Reco heads will cost you about $800 with no guarantee new heads should have 12 month guarantee amc seem to be the go these days for 'standard' replacement heads, make sure to get the ones that match your exaust headers, if your doin it yourself.

I have a good set of 1800 "S" heads, these are the best Type 4 heads.
They have just been pulled of a running engine, look good, but you know, they are used. $250.00 the pair.

Thanks guys. I am gambling on a set I got on Ebay (against all your advice I know). Got em for $50 so if it comes off I am a winner! If not, I might just be in touch. Thanks again.
