Type 3 Blowing Smoke / Pinging !!!

Hi all, question regarding type 3 blowing black smoke/pinging.

Have a 72 type 3 square back with solex 32-34 PDSIT-2 , 3 carbs and and 009 dizzy.

Have recently purchased the beast and noticed that under reasonably heavy load, im pinging (most probably from the wrong timing (should be 5 deg BTDC right??????) and also that im blowing black smoke at higher rev range only!!

changed the plugs and did the valve gaps, noticed that the valves where slightly out and the sparks had heaps of carbon on them... so fixed i fixed them...

when i did this, the performance increased a little, but still heaps of black smoke at higher revs...

would i be right in thinking its the mixture?? or could it be something more serious??

any ideas/ comments would be great

cheers

black smoke is carby and unburnt fuel
blue smoke oil
so she is running rich
a carby adjustment or differnet jets ?
thats all I can suggest

-With 009 you must have the vac line to the LH carb plugged.
-Too much fuel from accelerator pumps?
-Blocked air cleaner/inlet? I chased rich running for a time once to EVENTUALLY find one of the small flaps in air-inlet had been bent Inside the inlet, almost closing it off!
-Idle screws set too rich. Ours are ~ 1 turn out but they must be set once every other setting is right (eg., valves, timing etc.)
-Floats set somewhat to high (not sure if this can be done with PDSITs), or needle valves leaky in carb tops.
-Wrong jets, or have been cleaned out with wire or drilled out by someone thinking over-rich = faster.
-blocked air corrector jets (shouln't happen but who knows).
-etc!!!

Just about any SVDA dizzy will be better than a 009. The ones off a FI type 3 are good and have a better curve than a 009 even without the vac advance working. Try one of the forum sponsors for a price for a new SVDA dizzy.

OK Guys

What does SVDA stand for.

Am I correct in assuming that they are a mechanical AND vacuum advance??

Some guys in the States are saying that this distributor and a 34 PICT carb is the ultimate driveable engine in a VW> Is that right??

Correct - Single Vacuum Dual Advance. It advances due to both manifold vacuum and engine revs. Thus when accelerating hard, the manifold vacuum advances the spark to help you start off and overcomes the flat spot. While during cruising the mechanical advance keeps the spark advanced. I don't know that the 34 PICT is necessarily a good replacement for dual carbs.

You need a specific dissy for the type3 though. the vac can is in a diffenent spot

To purple T3

Yes, you are right. If you want the performance a dual carb set up is the way to go. But if you want the stock look, say a 1776 with slightly larger valves than stock, stock cam, pea shooter exhaust, this in my opinion is a very good "cruise" set up. You wont blow the Commodores away but it is a dream to drive.

ps: You're talkin to a guy whose been down the balls and all racer phase. I like to cruise. Rock steady.
