Kombi Autos
I'm thinking of a VW Offroader using an EJ series Subaru and Kombi Auto. Has anyone used this combination before? Kombi Autos, are they strong
enough? Ratios suitable?

Yep, me.
i have a baja kombi running an NA EJ22 + stock 2ltr auto. There are pros and cons for the auto box. apparently they do not like sharp angles, and mine
struggles a little in really soft sand, however I give my car a fair degreee of abuse and it has not failed me yet.
When I crossed the nullabor last year, it ran a bit hot after running for prolongued periods (16+hrs), however that was largely due to the 45+ degree
ambient temp!. on the the trip back it ran alot better. I suggest look at a Caravelle box with external oil cooler.
RE ratio's I sit on about 3100 rpm at 110kph and am running 235 65 15s. ideally this would be lower.
I think there a couple of manx's in SEQ running Kombi autos successfully. Also try talking to the guys from German autos in Bris. about buildign a
tough auto.
Volks conversions makes flex plate to suit the EJ's however I had a few issues with clearances on mine.

Thanks Col for the reply. If I do this it will be in a Baja Beetle Ute. Very much early planning stage as yet.
Thanks also for your comments Pete, the more info/experience the better.

yes done this a few times now
now hear this set the subaru power stering pump up to suck the oil out the auto & pass it through a oil cooler back into the auto .works a treat to
get the heat down .
fit two seals to the converter in put shaft when you have it apart
autos are the best in the sand !
